      Event Manager Interview

      31 Mar 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Riot Games in Mar 2015

      Interview

After applying on their website, I received a call from a recruiting coordinator to schedule a screen interview a day later. The beginning of the call focused on summarizing my previous experiences, featuring your relatively standard interview questions. The rest of the call focused more on culture fit. Riot is very well known for having an awesome culture, and a great community focused on a 'by gamer, for gamers' mindset. Having lots of experience in teamwork environments, and being an avid gamer, it seemed I would fit well within the culture, to which they agreed. My weakness coming in was my lack of experience with their feature game, League of Legends. They wanted me to familiarize myself with the game and its culture before pursuing my application further, so they asked me to reach level 10 in the game and to contact them afterwards. This took me a few days to reach, and the communication during so was great. My recruiting coordinator openly told me to ask him any questions that may come up during my play - and he would answer them personally - again a great look into how much this game means to them. They then set me up with a manager from the department I would be working in. The questions became much more job-specific, and were much more in-depth. Despite that the conversation was still very enjoyable and casual. We spent time talking about the job, real-life scenarios, more detail into Riot culture, and chatted about some highlights of the game. A few days later the same manager emailed me stating they would be pursuing my application further. They were very nice and broke down the reasoning behind their decision, a nice personal touch. They also discussed what the re-application process would look like if I continued to be interested later on. They even offered me another phone call to further break down their reasoning - again, a nice touch that too many employers overlook. Overall I had a great experience interviewing with them. While the atmosphere and culture of Riot is very casual, and relating to it is very important, it's even more important to not forget why you're on the phone with them - to sell yourself and tell them what you can do to better the company.

I applied through other source. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Riot Games (Los Angeles, CA) in Dec 2015

      Interview

I applied in mid-November 2015 and my first interview was today, which was over the phone. Lasted about 25 minutes. The recruiter was super friendly, seemed interested in me, my answers and was relaxed. It became clear, early on, that I was not the best candidate for this position as Riot would prefer someone with LOADS of professional experience, especially in logistics. If you're a Line Producer, or have experience at a television/news station, then you'd be a great fit. Also, they prefer someone who is an AVID gamer, primarily LOL, which also makes sense as this is a player-focused company. While I don't anticipate getting a call-back, though, that would be amazing, I am pleased with the way things went. If I was playing LOL for at least a couple years, and had Line Producer experience, then I'd probably be moving on to the next round. I have nothing negative to report.

      Interview

The recruiting personnel were delightful. We had an interview over the phone. I completely fumbled the first question and it pretty much was down hill from there. That said, they were incredibly nice about it and they also gave me plenty of insight into the company and were willing to talk with me about my interview and application materials after the fact. I have never had that opportunity and probably never will again until I apply with them again. Heartbreaking, but pleasant experience.

      Interview

It was over the phone and I was really only asked one question; "Walk us through your event management process". Admittedly, I blundered my way through the question. A few days later I received and email saying that they were going to pursue other candidates as it would be too difficult for me to work full time at Riot AND go to school. At no point had I stated that I would be in school nor did anyone ask me that. After clarifying that I had no intentions of being in school, they told me that their decision was also based on my lack of event management experience in areas other than conventions. My resume pretty clearly states that my other event experience lies in theatre, concert, and gaming as well as having a formal education in event production of all kinds. Additionally, had I ever been asked about my experience I would have included my event work in online gaming communities, trade shows and expos, meet and greets, broadcasts, festivals, workshops, faires, etc. I found it really upsetting that the reasons they gave me for not pursuing me as an applicant were all things they seemed to assume. If they just genuinely found me to be inadequate I would have worked hard for the next year to become more qualified. But they really just seemed to assume things about me and move on.
