Mechanical Design Engineer (Oral Group) Interview

      6 Aug 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Bothell, WA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Philips (Bothell, WA) in Jul 2014

      Interview

In mid-2014, I had a great 90% interview process from initial to the on-site interview at Philips in Bothell, WA. The interview was very challenging and engaging. I enjoy all the interviews with, whom would be my direct Manager, and other managers, and an engineer. What would be my hiring Manager of the Oral Group, have been an amazing person to work for. He posed many challenging questions including all engineering questions that hit the right chords with what I wanted to do. I also met with other 2 Managers from other department and they were also very engaging. I appreciate that they really focus on learning about me but also making sure questions they probe reflect the skills, background, and experiences will be a match to Philips. From Phone interviews with HR, then with my direct hiring manager, and finally Philips flying me in from out of state to Seattle was the best experience so far until the last 10 % of the interview which puts me in a state of the question. The last interview was with an engineer and it raises some questions about the teamwork at Philips. He brought in many parts and asked how I would design certain things or how to better improve issues of these products. The interview with the person started off quite abrupt unlike other interviews with managers I had before him. Really no formal or friendly introduction, no clear vision on how to ask or pose questions, and the objective of the questions you want the person to answer. Throughout the nearly an hour interview with him, he became a bit more agitated and condescending when I politely re-engage various conversations to pinpoint what questions he would like me to answer. He looks tired and stressed out so I became quiet. The latter half of the interview I answered questions as quickly and brief so as not to create any more unusual atmosphere. I left the on-site interview with Philip a bit un-easy despite I had great with interviews with him who would be my managers. It was also pivoting moment I had to decide on other offers that were waiting when I flew back from Seattle. If interview at Philip would have been 100% great and I firmly believe that the engineers I will be working with would have great personable personality and teamwork, I would have declined all other offers when I got home, and further waited for Philip to follow-up. A few days later I had to make a decision on my future career and I wrote an apology to HR and my hiring manager that I cannot continue the hiring process with Philip in Bothell, WA. It was really sad since I would have really wanted to work for Philip but that last 10% interview puts me in doubt. My suggestion to Philips would to give non-technical interview some points and tips and on interviewing, conversation etiquette, and point and tips on icebreaker when interviewing someone. Overall there is no downside and I highly recommend Philips to all those who apply. You may need to be prepared if an interviewer catches you off guard and know how to reposition the interview so it doesn’t become awkward.
