      Remote Software Developer Interview

      14 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at One Degree (New York, NY) in Mar 2020

      Interview

JUST Horrible. What was supposed to be an informal "phone" screen turned into some arrogant idiot demanding coding "tests" on the fly. I expected MORE of this organization being a "non-orofit', but they seemed as childish, ruthless, and short sighted as the "assembly line" hiring processes of big tech companies. 20+ years in programming and I was COMPLETELY **INSULTED** having a small child ask me to "explain" polymorphism. Are you kidding me?. They spent ZERO time telling me about the company culture, or discussing how my unique experiences could help them. Zero interest in YOU as s person - just "solve this algorithm". Completely DEHUMANIZING and disgusting. Dude spent NO time explaining WHY I should work at a place offering half my salary. Are you KIDDING Me? Offering a DIRT cheap salary with Medicore benefits ..it's your job to SELL your company to me, not the other way around. The ENTIRE first interview involved idiotic "coding" questions, and other nonsense. Not a "special" place, just another run-of-the-mill tech place offering DIRT cheap salaries while trying to "demand" the best without PAYING for it. This place may be great for KIDS and CHILDREN, not good for ADULTS. Arrogant, elitist, and snooty. Avoid!

We are sorry to hear this candidate had a bad experience. That being said, we take all candidates through the same skills assessment in the first phone call and are explicit that this is the first step. We share in advance: "In this phone call, we'll go over One Degree and the role, talk about why you're interested in joining, and then go through a series of software development questions so I can gauge your skill level." We did exactly that. Being able to demonstrate knowledge of the skills listed on a candidate's resume as well as general computer science concepts are critical first steps, and these are prerequisites listed on the job description for Software Engineer role. It's critical for us to be able to hire people in an efficient way, just like every other organization, and we have to first verify that a candidate has the skills they say they do before advancing them in the process. We offer a variety of ways for people to demonstrate their skills, not just through basic coding or through defining CS terms, although we believe those are also fair types of questions. (Note also that One Degree does not have an office in New York; this is not a factually accurate review. All initial interviews are done over the phone.)
