      Interview

Awful experience. Spent hours as usual. Creating a way overqualified CV and proofread the cover letter. I seemed to myself and friends as a perfect match. Great suitability and culture fit. I applied via email as was required. Within a single minute. I received a handwritten rejection email stating they are sorry, but they are only accepting UK engineers currently. I am from the UK! It even states that on my CV. They had not even read my cv and had not even had the time to read my cover letter! They rejected me based on my unusual British name. Which many mistakes as non-English. I feel like I was the victim of prejudice and find that truly unacceptable. I e-mailed back to point out their mistake and that I am British. I heard nothing back...Not even a sorry we made a mistake but read the cv and still no. Nothing! I am way overqualified for the role and at least expected an interview based on my cover letter. I felt I was a perfect fit. I used OLIO a lot and stated that my ethics and suitability seemed like a perfect match. To receive no communication apart from prejudice against my name is truly awful and I thought against their ethics. Really felt shamed and treated badly. Because my name is weird.

Hello, thank you for spending the time to review our interview process. As the hiring manager in this case I'd like to take the time to provide a response in terms of your specific case. Firstly, with regards to your initial application I must apologise, our internal recruitment tool identified you as being located in New York (possibly through a failed geoIP lookup), I took the time to look through your CV and introductory email and found nothing to disagree with this estimation (we often receive applications from all around the world). Therefore I took the time to write back and let you know that we didn't accept applications from outside of the EU (at the time). You later responded to this email clarifying out you were based in the UK, however by that point the vacancy had been filled. With regards to the accusation of discrimination, if you were to take a look at the company team page you'll note that our tech team is one of the most diverse I've come across. This is something I have actively worked very hard to foster, maintain, and hopefully will continue to grow in the future. Lastly, as a proud Welsh man currently residing in the heart of the Welsh valleys I also fully appreciate a name of deep Welsh origins such as yours.
