      Application

      I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual

      Interview

There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.

The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual in Jan 2010

      Interview

I got the interview through our school career center. The interviewer was sharp and on her toes; very informative and knowledgeable. She asks you questions to get a feel for your personality. She tells you that there is no salary and the job is straight commission. She continues to ask you questions about a time in your life in which you've had to overcome a difficult situation. Given that it is a financial representative job, you need that strong attitude and be able to move on. You have to pay for your own series exam and if you pass, they'll reimburse you. As a rep for them, you'll get your own computer, blackberry, and also a credit card if I'm not mistaken. You'll have warm leads with the company and be able to sit with their seasoned advisors. The tough part is the online test. If you haven't taken one before for a financial representative, keep in mind the life of a rep; a financial rep will have to overcome getting turned down--think of cold calling. What a financial rep job comes down to, really, is a sales job. The online test will basically see if you're built to be a salesman and if you can handle the difficulties that will come in your first year. I've taken 2 of them to date, and for the second time (because I've looked it up online and asked people about it), I actually got a second shot (with a different company). When you take it, try not to be rational and put your human feelings first. You have to almost put up this front that you won't let your emotions get the best of you. A number of the questions were rephrased later on, and the purpose of this is to see if you're just making it up and to really make sure you answer truthfully. Just pretend nothing can phase you when you're taking the test. Your interviewer gets the results right away. The workplace--you're going to have you're own cubicle. The interviewer made it seem laid back and even mentioned how everybody went out to happy hour with the bosses. If you want to be a financial rep and can handle the difficulties of it, go for it. It might even be great if you're going to be a senior in college so you can have that side job and have your series licenses with you, so that when you graduate, you can find a better job since you're already licensed.

      Interview

The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.
