      Senior Product Designer Interview

      21 Mar 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at New York Times

      Interview

The interview process started out great. The recruiter was knowledgeable and responsive, and I really enjoyed my interviews with the team. I got nothing but positive feedback, and I had a good feeling from the process. There was a screening call with the recruiter, conversation with the hiring manager, a panel portfolio review, interview with Engineering, and interview with Product. After 2.5 months and finishing the interview process, the recruiter went radio silent, despite my emails checking in and asking for an update. Ultimately, I was ghosted after the final interview. A couple weeks later, I noticed the same exact job description re-posted on LinkedIn. Just because they're the New York Times does not mean it's okay for recruiters to treat candidates this way. How hard is it to respond to emails asking for an update? I can't fathom why they'd ignore these emails other than indifference and laziness.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at New York Times

      Interview

As someone mentioned earlier, it is four-five rounds: - Recruiter screen - Conversation with the hiring director - Portfolio presentation (panel review) - Engineering interview + Product interview (they said the last two interviews would be conducted back to back) Generally chill process, I got up to the portfolio review. Got ghosted afterwards, even when I sent a follow-up email asking for an update. General "vibe" of the interviews felt a bit more casual but the portfolio panel was really giving me... nothing. They asked a few questions but it seemed like no one really wanted to be there. The process also felt lengthy for no reason. Took me 2 months to get to the third round.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at New York Times (New York, NY) in Feb 2021

      Interview

First step was a call with the recruiter, with basic questions about background, interest in the role, experience, etc. After that, there was a one-on-one wall with the hiring manager/design director, where she asked questions about design background, portfolio pieces, and collaborating with other teams. It seemed like it went well, but they never followed up, even after checking in a couple times. Super unprofessional, and turned me off to the team and organization as a whole.
