Very comprehensive and inclusive. People were able to balance technical questions about my previous work with broader questions about what motivates me and my career interests. It did not feel difficult at all.
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at NIH (Bethesda, MD) in Apr 2014
Interview
Phone call Interview that lasted two hours. Received a call a few weeks later that I had gotten the job. Each PI is different in this sense though. You must fill out an application online first complete with references before you can contact someone directly to see if there are any openings in their lab. Interview went very well, I was happy with it.
Make sure you are interested in the topic and you do your research on the lab before applying! I had a great experience and interview with these things in mind
