Student Engagement and Marketing Manager Interview

      6 Aug 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Ilford, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Mont Rose College (Ilford, England) in Jul 2024

      Interview

I applied via Indeed and just over a week later I received a message via Indeed inviting me to an interview for 29th July which I agreed to. As there was delays on the tube I sent an email informing them how sorry I was for being late and sent an email 30 minutes before my interview was schedule to take place so they had more than enough notice. Upon arrival I provided my name and signed in with security who informed me that one of the people who would be interviewing me was on their way down to come and get me. As soon as I sat down one of the senior members started to go through my cv with a fine tooth comb. They asked me why I applied to them and what have I been doing since my last role? Halfway through explaining why I applied another member of the senior team came in and from the minute they arrived my interview quickly turned into an interrogation. The senior member grilled me over my work history, asked why I applied to Mont Rose College just like her colleague did a few minutes before. The senior member of staff asked me what made me want to apply for this position and make a point by saying and a quote "Wow you graduated university a long time ago". The senior member of staff then went onto tell me that I didn't have student engagement experience and told me all of my jobs were short term which is not true and despite providing examples of this, my responses were constantly dismissed. What was supposed to be an 1 hour turned out to be 30 minutes and at the emd of the interview I was told that I was never going to be considered for the role I applied but because I had marketing experience and my cv is marketing focused they invited me down in the hope that I would be interested in a marketing officer position which paid substantially less than the role I thought I was lead to believe I was being interviewed for. The senior member of staff then asked if I would be interested in being considered for the officer role which I said i would be open to but I needed to know what the salary was. They said they didn't know but would pass my cv onto the person overseeing recruitment for that position, I asked what the salary and they said it would be less than the student engagement role because it wasn't a managerial position. A few days later I received a call from the person overseeing recruitment for that position and they told me the role was between £5k - £9k less than my previous role and then proceeded to provide me with details of what their interview process would be in September after summer holidays and told me they would be back in touch at the beginning of the next month. This was one of the if not the worst interview experiences I have ever had. I was invited under false pretences, then grilled over my work history, then lowballed and pushed into agreeing to take part in an interviewv for a role I didn't even apply for.

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the interview experience. We regret to hear that you found the interview challenging and not a pleasant experience. It is important to note that, despite your late arrival, we made every effort to accommodate you during the process. We understand that you described the interview as an interrogation, which is not correct. However, our intention was to ask relevant questions to assess your previous experience, skills, and overall suitability for the role, as well as to determine if you would find fulfillment in the position. After careful consideration, we concluded that the advertised role may not align with your qualifications and experience. Rather than simply declining your application, we sought to explore opportunities in a different department that may better match your background. We appreciate your willingness to be considered for this alternative position, and your CV was subsequently forwarded to the appropriate department with your consent, who later contacted you. If any aspect of the experience felt intimidating or negative, we sincerely apologise. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we will take it into account as we strive to improve our interview process. Thank you.
