I originally applied online for a Property Manager position and got a call back a week later from the Assistant Manager asking if I wanted to interview for the Assistant position. I was taken aback but she mentioned that she was promoted to the Manager position herself (why advertise a PM position then??) so she would be interviewing for her old position. I entertained the idea only because she kept insisting the pay was on a property manager level and that I would be a manager in line with her. After interviewing the next day with her and Skyping with the Regional Manager, I was offered the position the following day. I asked to expedite the process because I had an offer (a really great paying offer with a good company- which is hard to come by in Dallas) with another company and I needed to give them an answer soon. Because MPA was offering a larger property (which I prefer), I told them I preferred to work for them and would turn down my other offer if I was offered the position with them. The minute I got the offer with MPA, I turned down my other offer and shelled out a $300 non-refundable deposit on daycare because the "manager" wanted me to start on Monday (this was Thursday) and I needed to secure something quickly. I informed the manager of this on Thursday as well.
I waited all of Thursday for my pre-hire paperwork to come through (which the "manager" said she would send by the end of the day) and nothing came through. Fine, I figured things were busy. I wait the morning on Friday and still heard nothing. So I emailed asking if there was anything wrong only to get a one line response about how they now want to interview more people. I immediately called the "manager" and she just avoided my phone calls. I sent an email asking what gives given I turned down another offer (now no longer available to me) and put money I can't back on daycare. No response. I followed up with an email to the Regional who had also OK'd my hire. No response.
I can't believe the unprofessionalism of these people. Clearly they don't care about the effect their actions have on people's lives. I hope that one day, they experience such callousness by an organization with whom they interview (which I foresee to happen soon since the turnover in that office is unreal). As someone who has interviewed and hired many people, this is something I would never do as I know how to treat people who are already in a position of vulnerability when interviewing for a new job.
All I can see (based on reviews I read on the property and on this situation) is that I dodged a bullet working for such unprofessional people. By the grace of God, I secured a position shortly after with a much better national company that has been growing exponentially in an actual manager position. Everything happens for a reason.
