      Application

      I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr in Oct 2015

      Interview

A McMaster-Carr recruiter called me out of the blue. We talked briefly about what I am looking for in a career change, she goes over McMaster-Carr, then we scheduled a phone interview for the following week. The phone interview was about 45 minutes of the recruiter asking me to go over my resume and she asked questions about my experiences. I was told right away that I passed the phone interview, and we immediately set up an in-person interview about 2 weeks out. My day started out with filling a form at the front desk with information about myself, salary expectations, my high school and college information and GPA, and my work experience including salary information. The first interview was a 2-on-1 interview with two HR folks. They asked me to tell them about myself, asked me what I think the job was, asked me what I was looking for, and then they asked me questions related to my experience. The next round was a tour of the office and warehouse with someone who was hired into General Management. The tour was very interesting, and my interviewer did a great job of explaining what the different departments of the company did. Like other reviews say, this is a walking interview. The next interview was with a director. This conversation I did not walk away feeling good about. He challenged my resume content in a way I found to be rude ("Would you really say you did ___ at company X?"), and he did not seem interested in being there. He would ask me a question, and before I would be able to finish my answer, he would interrupt me and ask me another question. He asked me 3 questions related to my experience, and 1 questions about what I would change at McMaster-Carr. The following interview was the lunch interview. It wasn't really clear to me what the purpose of this interview was, and it was very awkward. It was a 2-on-1 interview, with one person from Systems and one person from Management. One person showed up late, after the first person and I had already finished half of our lunch by the time the second person showed up. The two people did not know each other, which added to the awkwardness. The first person was pretty quiet and I felt like I had to try and make conversation, to the point where it felt like a reverse interview. With about 15 minutes left of lunch, the two individuals decided to ask me about my experiences, my interests, what I'm looking for, and what I do at my current job. The final interview was with HR again. We talked about how my day went, and went through a couple of behavioral questions. Overall, almost everyone was nice and the day went smoothly. I wasn't a fan of the interview with the director and the lunch was really awkward. It's really a fit thing, and I encourage everyone to check it out and see what they think. For me, I couldn't see myself getting excited about working there, but it doesn't seem as bad as some of the other reviews on here read. Waiting to hear back from HR.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Tell me about yourself/your resume. - You interned with company X before. Did they give you a return offer? Why did you not take it? - How is your performance at your current company? Why are you looking to leave your current position? - What was the greatest impact you made at company X? - Did you have to lead a team at company X? - Why do you think McMaster-Carr has their own systems department instead of outsourcing? - We are trying to put the content in the catalog into the app. (Flips to a random page in the catalog) - How would you go about putting this table into the app? - Why do you think that we don't make callers push any numbers when they call customer service? - Why do you think we don't chase late payments if it's consistent with how the customer normally pays? - How do you think the items are organized in the warehouse? - Say there is a new item added to the catalog. How would you decide where to put it? - If a customer based on the East Coast orders 5 units of an item, and 4 are available in NJ and 5 are available in IL, do you ship 4 from NJ and 1 from IL, or do you ship 5 from IL? - What do you think checkers (people who open boxes they receive in the warehouse) check for? - What is one thing you would change at McMaster-Carr?

      Interview

The recruiter called me and asked me general questions about my style and related management experience. She told me a little more about the position. The general management role involves working on business processes, projects, etc. I never heard back from the recruiter after the initial phone call.

      Interview

A recruiter from McMaster-Carr contacted me and set up a phone interview. Even though I had sent my resume directly to the recruiter, she started the interview by asking whether I had sent my resume and then attempting to find it in her inbox. The disorganization was off-putting. The interview itself was pretty straightforward, with a resume walkthrough and some follow-up questions.

Tell me about a task that didn't go according to plan. How did you handle it? What feedback did you receive?
