      Field Applications Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at MathWorks in Apr 2019

      Interview

Interview process started with an initial phone screening along with a follow up phone screen with a second person. From there an all-day in-person interview was scheduled a few weeks out. You were tasked with preparing a 30-45 minute powerpoint slide presentation to highlight your career and notable achievements in front of a group audience. The all day interview started with initial introductions and from there started with going to large conference room to give presentation to 5-6 people in the office and several others over the speakerphone. From there , the day was broken up into (4) 1 hour interviews with various people in the office up across the food chain (including the director and the top salesperson at the office) along with a group lunch with about 4 team members.

      Question 1

The interview process was less technical in nature from a standard engineering position. The questions were more hypothetical like what you might do in a certain situation with a customer or a possible sales opportunity. There was a lot of discussion about what each worker did during a typical day and how it impacted the business. The role was more of a sales-focused position as opposed to a technical position. My resume was more technical in nature so they really wanted to make sure I would be happy with a sales-focused role. I would not say the interview was incredibly hard but it was very thorough in getting to understand your personality and sales-focused capabilities. It was definitely the longest in-person interview I have ever had.
