I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at MathWorks
Interview
Phone interview with a current Applications Support Engineer. Beforehand she emailed me a list of topics they would likely ask about, based on my background (not an engineer). They were:
Basic Math: calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. I had to find some eigenvectors and values.
Programming Concepts: constructs, style and logic
Java: OOP, compilation and syntax and structure based concepts
Matlab: basic Matlab syntax, commonly used functions and documented concepts
SQL and some database concepts
Some of these sections involved me doing work with pencil and paper, and others involved a WebEx session and coding inside of a plain text editor.
I was surprised by a number of C/C++ questions, which is what knocked me out of the running.
It is an extremely engineering and detail oriented culture, and they do seem to have a checklist for the interview. In the end, I didn't know all of the material that they were looking for, despite feeling comfortable with the initial list of topics.
There were three phases for recruiting procedures. The first stage was a brief and relaxing conversation, the second stage was about technical things and hiring manager asked several questions in the third stage.
