I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Macy's (Charlotte, NC)
Interview
For most stores the interview will be an internal interview process with the current employees but some stores have done outside interviews. Apply online, Email correspondence, you can apply to as many positions as you like (no limit) and multiple stores (stores don't communicate with each other). You are most likely to be interviewed by a senior manager either the Store VP Manager or a Veteran (+10 years).
The things you need to mention or do in your interview that are critical:
-explain how well and fast you adapt to changing technology (if we know you can adapt to using our manager override function faster it helps every manager: be the techie with sociability!)
-explain how you will keep people on task while making the working environment pleasant (talking down to employees you barely know is a NO-NO)
-you need to over talk your interviewer (shy people will be dismissed)
-polished executive look with major color being black (pay close attention to being shiny, smooth, and not a lot of lint) It's hard to make all black very stylish but if you can accomplish that we respect you more
-explain how you can walk up to complete strangers and make a good conversation and close a sale
DON'T
-have schedule conflicts (Can't work on Sunday=Not hired) Understand retail means EVERYDAY especially weekend availability .... you can take Monday off (slowest day in retail)
-have issues with a late closing (12:30 at night) and early open (6am) during holiday season (the only exception is if you only use public transportation)
-want to take Thanksgiving or Christmas off to go visit family the better excuse is someone died! (Retail Managers always want to visit their family but cannot... THIS IS RETAIL)
