      User Experience Designer Interview

      26 Jul 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Macy's (San Francisco, CA) in May 2018

      Interview

I went through a recruiter from an agency first about the position. I got a call from the hiring manager asking basic questions and the next step was to do a design exercise. They decide if they like you before moving forward to an in person. I heard zero feed back on my exercise and they expected you to spend no more than 4 hrs on the design exercise. I thought it was pretty messed up that you are expected to do an exercise that is about their company and give ZERO FEEDBACK and a 50/50 chance of whether you will be coming in person for an interview. Talking to a hiring manager before a team member to do an exercise is like doing free work with free ideas for them. The agency wanted sketches, wireframes, thought processes, high fidelity screens, working prototype as delivery for the exercise. Proceed with caution and decide if it is worth it for you. User Experience Design Exercise: Goal: Design a seamless & personally engaging macys.com experience for customers to easily find & purchase items, and keeps them coming back. Exercise: Create a compelling vision for macys.com, demonstrating how you would approach enhancing and innovating the future customer experience. Spend a max. of 4 hrs on creating your vision. Present your work in any form of an artifact, from storyboards, prototypes, video and slides. Alongside the vision, demonstrate how you might operationalize this vision over time. Come prepared to explain your vision on the day of your interview. (that is if you get an interview, otherwise wasted time)

      Interview

The interview went very well, very friendly and open team. Great location in downtown San Francisco. Seems like a great place to work with many benefits. I would recommend the interview process.
