      Editorial Assistant Interview

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Macmillan Learning (New York, NY) in Sept 2019

      Interview

If you pass their initial phone screening you’ll be invited for a second in-person interview. The people are lovely and the office itself is beautiful. Fair warning - it was the longest interview I’ve ever had in my life. 2/3 hours, multiple people.

      Interview

I had two phone interviews with Macmillan Learning. The first was with a recruiter and the second was with a couple of company executives. I felt like my second interview went very well and going by the job description and what I was told, I felt extremely qualified based on my qualifications and experience. However, after a week, I reached out to see if they had made a decision about my moving forward, and was told that they had decided to go with other candidates. I can accept that, but I requested feedback, since I honestly couldn't think of anything I had done wrong and was genuinely curious about what I needed to improve. I have yet to receive a reason or any type of feedback, which is highly disappointing considering I was told from the beginning that they were looking for someone who valued education more so than someone with experience. I had mentioned my own teaching and educational writing aspirations several times, but apparently that wasn't enough? I'm highly disappointed that their value of education apparently doesn't extend to those they are looking to hire, since they seem unwilling to provide constructive criticism.

      Interview

The interview process is lengthy, but it says a lot about the company. They'll have you do several rounds of phone/digital interviews, then they'll make you come in for an in-person meeting if they decide to move forward with you. It seems that they want the entire team's approval before hiring someone (a value more companies should take up). They also have you complete a project, which I've noticed many others complain about. I thought it was great - not terribly time consuming, and it shows you what you'd be doing in your role. My sole issue with their interview process was the lack of professional courtesy extended after the fact. Following multiple interviews and a project, it's fine to go with another candidate. But the hiring managers never even called to inform me that the position had been filled. And to add to the insult, they failed to respond when I reached out to inquire about their decision. The entire thing came off as very rude, which is a shame. I'd pegged them as personable individuals with great company values.
