      Sales Assistant Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Lush (Brisbane) in Jun 2017

      Interview

Lush has a vast interview process that includes applying online with a creative cover letter, then a group interview and finally a trial shift before you are considered for the job. About a month after my online application I got an email telling me that I've been short listed for a group interview. The group interview consisted of a group of about 15 applicants. We were each told to introduce ourselves and then asked a few questions. The manager and trainee manager then gave each applicant a knot-wrap and did a short demonstration of how to wrap a present. Each of us then had to come up with our own knot-wrap design. After that we were then split into two groups. My group was first taken to the massage bars where we had to demonstrate the product in groups of two. After that we went to the bath bomb section where we individually picked a product and then demonstrated it to the group. Lush is really into emotive language, so try using some creative metaphors when describing products. After the demonstrations, the manager and trainee manager went off and inspected our knot-wraps that we did at the start. One unique design was chosen and that person got to keep the present they wrapped. At the end we were all thanked and told we will be contacted on our result within the coming days. I was called two days after and told that they would like to see me for a three hour paid trial shift. The shift was in the same week as the group interview so their response process is fast. For the trial I was told to wear all black and closed in shoes, and bring my TFN and bank details. On the day of the shift I signed a bunch of papers and then was pretty much thrown on the shop floor. The trainee manager took me on a quick tour of the shop to show me where everything is and also gave me a few tips on how to communicate with customers. She stressed the fact that you need to approach a customer with open-ended questions, eg. What brings your to Lush today? What type of scents do you like? How does your skin feel on a day to day bases? She then told me that my trial has started and left me by myself. I managed to quickly find a customer and do some demonstrations on her with skin masks. After that first customer experience it became a whole lot easier. If I didn't know something I was able to ask one of the other employees in the shop or mention that I was on a trial shift. All customers I had were extremely nice. The hardest part for me was approaching some customers as you could clearly see they did not want to be bothered, but I soon realised that it's okay if they don't need help, as long as you at least asked! The kids were the easiest to talk to as they really enjoyed the demonstrations, so I always targeted them instead of the adults. I believe that demonstrations are the most important part of the shift so try to do as many as possible! My trial shift ended and I was surprised at how quickly the time went by. The manager then took me aside as asked me what my favourite part of the shift was, to which I answered the kids, and then asked me that if I could change anything about this shift what would it be, I said that I wish I had more knowledge of some of the products. She then thanked me and told me that she'll let me know of my result in about a week. Four days passed and I got a call offering me a sales assistant position, I immediately accepted! The next few days consisted of me getting a contract, signing it and then talking about my availability and training. I start my first shift at the end of this week and I could not be more excited! My most important tip is to just be as friendly and confident as possible! Also do some research on the products, it's really impressive if you actually know what you're talking about!

      Interview

It was a group interview, very unconventional, hands-on, and activity-based, teamwork. They expect you to know their company values and ethics, which will carry over to your role. It was very relaxed and they made me feel very comfortable and heard.

      Interview

Was offered an interview and it was fairly casual - in the cafe, and it only lasted around 45 minutes. Pretty much immediately after I was offered a trial shift, and I went and it was kind of horrible because we didn’t know anything about the products, and it also wasn’t very busy so it felt like we were competing with each other to get a customer’s attention, only to not even be able to give them proper information and just have to guess. It was a bit embarrassing and we didn’t get paid either, but we got a free shower gel. I found out I got the job on the way home from the trial shift.
