Interview
Avoid this company. Clearly they don't follow tactful practices in their hiring process. I hadn't seen the other two harsh interview stories here before or I probably would not have even bothered. But I didn't research glass door before responding, so shame on me. Here's my "third-strike" tale of what a waste of time and energy this company is in terms of interviewing...
Was asked via email by the company owner (not a creative or art director) to do a working interview. I was asked to spend only 2 hours making the front of a postcard mailer for one of their clients better, because they felt that the one they had was terrible. There were no details on what the client's direction or goals might be and I was only given a poorly designed pdf to work with. I spent the alotted 2 hour time and came up with something really nice, in spite of being locked out of the fonts and source assets with a poorly formatted acrobat file. I sent him the redo and... no response. A week later I sent another email to confirm that he had gotten my response and 2-hour trial sample and... you guessed it, still no response.
It's Christmas time, I have three kids and I need a job. I don't have time for this. I can handle it just fine if he didn't like my sample or had some other reason to move forward without me, but no response at all? Walk on by, you'll be wasting your time.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Can you make our design better in 2 hours with absolutely no resources or direction?
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Kenna Media (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2016
Interview
After my first application email I get this one line email, asking if I could go into their Ballard office to discuss the position. Exactly one line. No more information if it's a proper interview. No phone screening, no nothing, just come in. Which was strange.
I go in, meet with the owner and the account manager. They ask me about my work and tell me details about why they are hiring a Sr. designer. There were no proper design interview type questions asked, nor could I consider that to be an interview but I had gone mentally prepared that it could have been an interview. But since I wasn't interviewed by any of the design leads, I guess they literally called in in to 'discuss' the role.
After which I sent a standard courtesy email saying it was a pleasure to meet blah blah!
1. Who just sends a one line email calling someone in without a phone screening
2. They call someone in, because you desire to discuss the role f2f vs first screening over phone and determining whether they should call the person in?
3. After the meeting they say expect to hear back next week whether they will go ahead or not for interviews.
4. But then they dont email for two weeks. So I email to check in whether there is any update. So I expect some response, saying sorry we went ahead with someone else or sorry we will not be calling you for an interview or yeah it is still open we will get back with a decision soon, SOMETHING!
YOUR TIME MAY NOT BE VALUABLE BUT VALUE OTHER'S TIME! DON'T EXPECT THEM TO COME AT YOUR CALL, OH SORRY ONE LINE EMAIL AND THEN NOT RESPOND OR EMAIL AND JUST DISAPPEAR!
4. GET YOURSELVES A COMMUNICATIONS HEAD AND A RECRUITER, Clearly the owner nor the account manager have any idea of what they are doing
