I did an online test which I passed, then it took a while but was kept updated by HR on progress. A video interview was booked. At first I had some technical issues which caused one of the interviewers who was in her 50s or 60s to shake her head which I didn’t think of much at the time. On the initial email titled ‘what to expect’, they do say that in technical difficulties they will arrange via telephone. I couldn’t hear them very well and sadly at the time the gardeners came out to do their thing which didn’t help. Nonetheless I soldiered on and gave a good presentation (according to them), the older interviewer also shook her head a few more times, at one point when I said about doing HR/admin work for my fathers building business she shook her head (not sure why, maybe she didn’t like my class??). They said I will hear within a few days, I didn’t get the role sadly. After talking with other people, they said the older interviewer was quite rude to be shaking her head like that. I then gave feedback to John Lewis who didn’t seem to like this and gave what a manager may say to a sassy employee ‘chatback’ rather than taking it as constructive critique. I thought the whole process was somewhat a waste of time as if your class/face doesn’t fit don’t bother. When I asked for feedback (which is good to be offered) they said that they couldn’t tell what I would do in a certain situation, personally I feel that’s a big fail on their side as interviewers not to ask the right questions or failure to ascertain that with their skill set.
