I applied online. I interviewed at Hopper in Jul 2024
Interview
After recruiter call and hiring manager call, i was given a take home, which they claim it's a 'light' take home and should only take about 2 hours to complete, It's just to see if applicants are comfortable with the dataset. It's actually a very lengthy take home with all open-ended questions and can easily go beyond 10+ hours. I was rejected after the take home submission and one of the feedbacks given was that my assumptions were too arbitrary.
Please don't waste your time like I did interviewing for this role. They do not give clear expectations and their guidelines will set you up for failure.
Recruiter call, then asked to spend 2-3 hours on a takehome assignment that involves lots of data cleaning. Regardless of your interview status, DO NOT SPEND MUCH TIME ON THE TAKEHOME. Despite a travel-industry-wide dropoff in domestic travel, the recruiter said the business was "going great", so I tested the hypothesis seen in these reviews: that the company is using ideas sent in from ex-FAANG to get KPIs for product features they need to optimize for revenue - I only left one idea and it wasn't original on purpose, but finished the exercise so that it was technically sound, spent about 3 hours on it, for my own means to stay fit, and did not get the next interview (nor did I expect it). Was glad to prove the hypothesis and help people reading this. Interviews are where ideas materialize not a takehome assignment. It suggests more about the culture @ Hopper than anything, but enjoy your interview.
