I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Hillstone Restaurant Group (Newport Beach, CA) in Jan 2011
Interview
You must fill the application out on the spot and be ready to interview the same day. They do make you wait a long time especially if they put out an ad and tons of people show up. Minimum of 3 interviews with different managers. If you only do one and they thank you it means that you did not get hired. They say they will call but they don't. Complete 2 tests, background check and a realistic job preview (RJP.) Can take a while, I have seen it take over a week for some people. Sometimes you may not be able to do all 3 interviews in one day so they will schedule the last. After the third interview is when you take both tests. They are graded right away. If they do not schedule an RJP date or mention that they will schedule it then you didn't pass both tests and you will not get hired. Last thing is a background check which takes a couple of days to come back so you have to wait for it before you get the job.
What they are looking for:
- outgoing personality, able to carry a conversation, hard workers
- SMILE - a lot, they love friendly people. You will not make it through all three interviews unless you smile
- Your interest in the company (not just for the job) - do some research at hillstone.com. They also want to know that if they hire you and spend time training you that you will stay. Even short-term employees rarely stay for less than a year. They do not hire for summer or Christmas only.
- customer service ability. They want to know if you will give good customer service. This is why they will hire someone with no serving experience. They believe that they can teach you to serve if you have an understanding of how to give good customer service. They will ask questions to determine if your serving style is just serving or if you can go above and beyond just delivering food.
- professional: if you don't know what professional attire is google it. I would even suggest this to most young women out there because 90% of the females that come in are automatically disqualified due to attire. Dressing in a sexy outfit might get you hired elsewhere but it will not help you here and it may even hurt you. Men: please shave and get a haircut and also look up business attire because it does not include vans, pants and a collared shirt. Also black jeans are NOT dress pants.
After the 3rd Interview and if they like you they will ask you to do:
1. Personality Test: Easy but long with no time limit. Just don't sound like a psycho.
2. General Knowledge Test: Easy but times. Kinda like the SAT but easier. They grade you on how many questions you answer and how many you get right. More importantly they observe you while you are taking the test to see how you perform under pressure. The test is made so no one is able to finish all the questions in the allotted time. That is the point so just stay calm and answer as many as possible while staying cool.
Realistic Job Preview (RJP): They will ask you to come in and "shadow" for a shift so you can see if you feel like you would fit it. This is not for you. They use this as an observation tool so that they can assess your personality over a longer period of time. You will follow a server while they explain stuff...yada, yada. Do not worry about remembering anything they tell you. What they are looking for is if you SMILE and how you interact with staff and guests. SMILE at guests even say hi how are you, be courteous. Talk to staff or talk to a guest. If you can strike up a conversation with a guest they will love you. Ask questions. The server will do a bunch of talking and then ask if you have any questions. Don't ask stupid stuff that you would learn in training like "how would you ring in this...or can you make this without cilantro." This is your opportunity to ask staff what it is like to work there. Also don't be afraid to ask them about themselves. They want to know if you can hold conversation, are personable, ability to work in a team that relies on communication.
As some point they do a background check. Just don't lie about anything. If you have something tell them. For example a DUI does not automatically disqualify you but lying about it will.
Interview questions [4]
Question 1
What differentiates great service/going above and beyond from good service/only being an order taker & food delivery person.
They want to know that money is not the main & only reason for wanting to work for them. Why do you want to work here? Why do think you will be a good fit?

Weird two round interview process thay stretches out. One interview is online if you make it to that point. The online interviewer and in person ask generic questions that were pretty easy to answer.

Interview
Initial is open interviews, have to show up exactly at the start time listed, interview took 5 minutes and gave the impression they only look at resumes anyways. About 10 people showed up at the start and everyone had a different interviewer which seemed odd.
