      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      14 Oct 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

      I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at H E B in Sept 2022

      Interview

I interviewed in September 2022. Initial recruiter call: overview of work history and what you're looking to do. The recruiter gave me four teams to consider joining and asked which sounded like the best fit. For the tech screen, they give you a choice between live coding and a take-home. I chose the take-home. The project was a server with a database written in Java. The goal is to perform object detection in images uploaded via an API (the actual detection can be delegated to a 3rd party like Imagga). I spent a good 4-5 hours on the coding assignment to make sure it reflected well on me. The prompt had a few unusual requirements but I just rolled with them, such as a requirement to return the image payload data in the JSON response. The virtual on-site consisted of 3 back-to-back 1 hour interviews. The first two interviews had 3-4 interviewers and the last had 2 managers. The first interview was supposed to go over the programming exercise, but I don't think my interviewers really looked at it (except for one) or tried to run it. They mostly asked questions about my background and projects I had worked on. I was interviewing for a team using Scala so they asked my opinion on functional programming and asked why I used an imperative style in one part of the coding exercise. In general, it was really soft-ball stuff. The next interview was exactly the same but with a different team and they hadn't seen my programming exercise. This interview felt very aimless as they seemed like they were just asking random questions to fill the time. By the end I felt like I was trying to guide the interview so they got something out of it. The last interview was supposed to be with two managers but one of them was a no-show. This was the most interesting and engaging of the interviews as the manager had a lot of experience and seemed to know what he was looking for. He asked mostly behavioral questions and tried to get a feel for how I would fit in. I felt like it went very well, though I got the vibe that he wasn't sure I would fit in at HEB -- lots of comments about how it's a large, century-old company that can move slowly. I felt like I had aced the programming assignment as well as the interviews but after about five days I got a canned email saying I had been rejected. I asked for feedback and got another canned email saying I had been rejected. I honestly have no idea why I didn't get an offer, except maybe that they felt like I wouldn't fit in with my faster-moving startup background. All in all, the interviews felt pretty disorganized and it seemed like pretty junior people were running the show.

      Question 1

      - Coding exercise: write a Java server with a database that performs object detection in uploaded images. - 3 hours of random questions about my previous job. - Other behavioral questions and feelings about programming language paradigms.

      Interview

Easy interview. I had a take home coding assessment and 4 interviews in total. One with hiring manager, and 3 panel interviews with 2 engineers at each. I received great feedback throughout but then got ghosted towards the end. Attempts to follow up were ignored. Not sure what happened.
