Managing Consultant Grid Modernization (ES&I) Group Interview

      31 Aug 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Washington, DC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Guidehouse (Washington, DC) in Jul 2021

      Interview

Allow me to forewarn you and set your expectations so you are not disappointed should an offer not be extended. There were a lot of things that were highly dysfunctional in this process and its important for applicants to be aware, and for Guidehouse to recognize what they're doing and the lack of professionalism in their approach. (which may be due to COVID, and remote work constraints but its still sloppy) Also - if your resume is like mine where you've had a lot of roles for 2 to 3 years and then moved on to something new, that is an absolute liability for Guiehouse and they will let you know in the interviews. Most of my interviewers were there for the long haul and I felt that I was at a major disadvantage before I started simply because of job hopping even though that's becoming the norm in the technology world. 1 - I interviewed with 5 people total for this energy role above in the ES&I division. Each of the interviews was spaced out by at least a week, or more. 1 with the recruiter and then 4 others in that specific practice. The recruiter seemed highly highly interested in my candidacy to the point where I believed my chances were higher than they were. 2 - Each interview generally consisted of similar moderately difficulty questions. While I thought I was advancing to the next "round" I got the feeling that I was scheduled to talk to all 5 people anyway unless I truly blew one of the interviews, but not sure if that's the case for everyone. 3 - The questions were highly similar among interviewers and there were no case study type questions 4 - At the end of the last interview I waited almost 2 months for a response. I knew a few weeks in that since I hadn't heard back I probably didn't get the job. Nonetheless, I asked the recruiter twice for feedback after waiting about 3 weeks after the last interview and was ghosted twice. I asked an alumni from my undergraduate institution who is a director there to reach out to the recruiter and he still couldn't get a response. Finally I received a generic rejection email about 2 months later Now comes....round #2! 1 - Still determined to get into Guidehouse I apply to another role, this time for something in defense, although its wrongly described as being in law enforcement. Energy was a top choice for me but I figured this could work as well. 2 - I interview with 5 people and a new recruiter who's managing this role at least has the courtesy to fast track the interviews and line them all up in the same week. The whole process takes less time than the previous role. I'm told I will have one fewer interview than normal because I'm already a known quantity and can skip a round. 3 - But alas, I wasn't as well-known as I thought and I end up going through all 5 rounds. The final interview is with a partner in the practice. He has me walk through every job I've had, which honestly should have been done earlier in the process at which point he says this job isn't a fit and I should focus on the energy / ES&I vertical. I tell him I've already applied to that vertical and he says he'll follow up with the interviewers for that role. I never hear back. 4 - I apply to two more roles in ES&I and another 3 weeks go by. I reach out to the recruiter who says I was rejected for those roles but apologizes that the rejection email didn't come through. Folks, I hope you don't have to go through what I went through. Lesson learned and no more applications to Guidehouse though they do make for some good reviews/stories:)
