I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Green Bean Coffeehouse (Greensboro, NC)
Interview
I went in for an interview with the owner and she seemed very relaxed and kind. She asked me a few basic questions about my experience cooking and told me that in her businesses everyone works an unpaid training shift. I scheduled this with her and she later contacted me to switch days. Come to find out this was because she was covering for her cook as a favor for working extra the week before. I worked a 10 hour unpaid shift without a break. The majority of which was grunt work the owner clearly did not want to do. After washing dishes for a couple hours the owner came in and yelled at me to move faster because I still had to mop. Several times she admitted that they do not follow certain health requirements, but that was really only important when the health inspector came. She also required only certain staff members to cover their heads and did not bother to cover hers at all. The food itself was actually very good, and her staff all seemed nice and generally got along. The owner I am sure is a fine person in general, but she clearly has very twisted ideas of how to run a business without taking advantage of others. I very kindly rejected her job offer, but in all honesty it was the most unprofessional interaction I have ever had.
