I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at GoTo (Montreal, QC) in Sept 2022
Interview
I was first contacted on LinkedIn by a "Talent Discovery Analyst" from GoTo. We've set up an initial call.
I was being interviewed for a position in video conferencing, yet the initial talk was going to be done over the phone...
I was asked if a call can be done somewhere between 2PM and 3PM CST the next day. I said that 2PM would work best for me.
Now, I assumed the recruiter knew my timezone (since they knew where I lived). Probably shouldn't have... but anyway. The call was missed because the recruiter assumed 2PM CST. So we had to re-book it.
Now, I know. Miscommunication on both ends. But all of this would have been avoided by sending me an actual calendar invite. We do, live in 2022. But none was actually sent. And there we are. Simple opportunity to make both our lives easier missed.
When I asked why would someone want to use GoTo instead of google meets or zoom, the answer was honestly not very well sold. "We do everything" kind of answer. Google Meets already seems to do everything they do in addition to being already linked to a calendar and email. Could have done a better job at selling the product. I am not convinced why in the world anyone would choose them.
I figured I should at least give it a fair chance anyway. Sometimes recruiters don't sell the company very well.
So I was asked when the best time for a technical challenge was. I opted for the weekend (Saturday / Sunday) as they said you have 48h to complete it. I made sure no big plans happened for my weekend so I could actually take the time and do it.
The challenge was supposed to be sent automatically to my email on Saturday morning (as obviously they do not work the weekend. No complaints there).
Saturday came and went, no email. I messaged through LinkedIn but, obviously it was the weekend.
On Monday at 10PM, I receive the email with the challenge telling me it is meant to be completed on Monday, at 10AM (So 10 hours prior).
The email mentioned that the person's computer had issues and the email didn't send...???? Excuse me but... what? If your company depends on a single computer to remain open and operational in order to send out an automatic email... what kind of tech company are you...?
Anyway. Suffice to say that it's a weird interview process. They don't really seem to have their stuff together. I can't necessarily say it's absolutely terrible or that the company is bad. I feel like I just had bad luck but... I also feel like they could make an actual effort.
My main impression is that they do not care about your actual time. I have 10 to 20 companies ready to interview me. I do not have time to run after you. Get your process together. Start using video conferencing and send actual invites. If you're going to send a challenge over the weekend, the least you can do is login to make sure it sent and shoot the person a message to reschedule if it didn't. Otherwise, just don't offer the option
I get that you want your weekend off. But guess what, I made my time available for you. The least you can do is make sure I didn't waste it.
I applied online. I interviewed at GoTo (Budapest)
Interview
Classic 3-step interview process (HR -> technical -> manager). One great thing was that there was no live coding at the tech interview. When I asked why they said it is not a good way to evaluate someones abilities because it is an extreme high-pressure situation, not like the everyday work. I can't agree more.
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
There was an example code (approx. 1 page) and I had to analyze it. First understand while thinking out loud, than spot problem points and suggest improvements.

It was a nice experience with GoTo
Eva, the recruiter was a really professional and she introduced the company and the role in a way make me more excited.
And the technical interview team was a kind team and I never felt anything not positive with them.
I did not passed the interview but it was not difficult.
