      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Genetics Center (Orange, CA)

      Interview

The interview process was lengthy and took 3 hours to complete, although the questions asked were not intense and were typical interview questions. I am rating this experience as negative because of how unprofessionally and distastefully the vice president handled the application process post-interview. After verbally offering me the job on the phone, he requested that I come into the office to sign the offer. I disclosed that I had other interviews scheduled this week and next week, so I needed more time to consider the offer before making a decision. I asked him if one week would be alright for me to get back to him by and he said sure, but the the quicker the better, which is understandable. After ending the call, I emailed the vice president again to thank him for the offer and his time, and to reiterate that I would be getting back to him in a week. Two hours later, he emailed me back saying "As you consider your options, we are also considering our other options. Please do not assume you still have an offer from us." This is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful of my time and efforts to communicate throughout this 5 week application process. If the timeline I disclosed was too long for them to accept, it would have been much more appropriate for the vice president to communicate that he instead wanted my decision in two hours rather than verbally agreeing to waiting a week and then emailing me two hours later that he had rescinded my offer. Furthermore, it is 2024, and it is expected that candidates should have other interviews or offers. Although I respect their decision to consider other candidates, this should not have been used as reason to rescind my offer, and I advise any other potential applicants to reconsider if they would like to provide labor for a company that is so disrespectful and inconsiderate to its applicants.

We try to maintain transparency and respect throughout our hiring process. We appreciate the effort and time all candidates invest in interviewing with us. Our interview process is indeed comprehensive, designed to ensure a good fit for both the candidate and our team. We understand and respect that candidates may have multiple opportunities to consider, and we aim to be as accommodating as possible in these situations. Regarding the specifics of your situation, your February 28, 2024, Email included “I really appreciate your patience with me throughout the interview and application process and I will be in contact with you by the end of next week (March 8) regarding my decision.” After a lengthy process, you still wanted us to wait another 10 days more. While we try to provide candidates with sufficient time to make informed decisions, the dynamics of our hiring needs sometimes require us to consider our other options. This is a common practice in the industry. Our intention was not any disrespect but to communicate the constraints we were under and provide useful status information for your other decision making. We regret any misunderstanding that may have arisen from our communication. We wish you the best in your job search and future endeavors.
