I applied online. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) (Orion, MI) in Feb 2026
Interview
Process consisted of a "15 minute" recorded response where 5 questions were asked and I was given 3 minutes to record responses. I passed the video portion and was moved to a formal onsite interview at their Lake Orion plant. Below are some of my comments on the process.
- GM was EXTREMELY slow and unresponsive to emails and follow ups. The whole process took 3+ months to complete start to finish.
- The video screening was very glitchy and difficult to complete. I needed to use multiple browsers and never received confirmation my responses went through. Recruiter never responded when I followed up on this.
- The onsite interview process was very disorganized. GM was interviewing 200+ applicants for the role, more details to follow.
- Getting into the plant for the onsite interview was difficult with unclear directions. Security and other teams were somehow unaware of a mass hiring event and would not let applicants into the building.
- Once inside, after being assisted by an employee, applicants were asked to sign in and stand around outside an elevator with no organization.
- Teams of interviewers came down and collected applicants by name and took them either up or down a level to interview rooms.
- Interviews were conducted by teams of 2 GM leaders who seemed to barely know each other or know the interview process, shuffling through papers and taking time to prepare for themselves out of the interview time frame.
- The interview consisted of 4 questions (strictly STAR format) followed by an open Q & A. Interviewers did not seem to know the answers to what I believe were fairly basic questions about the company and role.
- GM explicitly requested you send a thank you email after your onsite interview along with any follow up questions. My recruiter never followed up with my thank you email or questions.
Overall, the process lacked communication, was highly disorganized and somehow seemed rushed while taking 3+ months to complete. The interview process was very impersonal and made applicants feel as though they were numbers on a spreadsheet. I will be withdrawing my remaining applications with GM and would not recommend based not only on my experience, but that of current employees that I do know.
