MDP - Auto Damage Appraiser Interview

      6 Aug 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Baltimore, MD
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at GEICO (Baltimore, MD) in Aug 2019

      Interview

      1. Number of Interviews: 3 (2 phone, 1 in person). 2. How long was the hiring process? For me, I had 3 interviews over a 2 month period. 3. How were the interviews? The two phone interviews were very simple. They both asked basic interview questions, management and leadership based questions, etc. The final interview was a little different. For the final in-person interview, they have you listen to a recording for 35 minutes. The recording was for a fake insurance company where you had to absorb information on how the company works and then go roleplay about 5 scenarios during the next hour. The recording was played over an old boombox that I could barely understand. On top of that, the CD was old and skipped periodically, sometimes skipping multiple sentences at a time. The scenarios were tricky to figure out, especially given all the information you have to take in right away. The facilitators that you role play with also did not explain what I was going to be doing very well. At the end of the interview, I was simply told I was finished and then left alone in a room in the back of the GEICO building. I received no feedback, didn't get to talk to anyone, and had to find my way out of the building (in my experience, interviewers usually at least thank me for my time and walk me out). The next day, I received an email informing me that GEICO would not be hiring me for the position. After 2 months of going back and forth with them, all I got was a decline email, not even a phone call and zero feedback. I called GEICO HR to see if I could get some feedback so that I could work on myself and make improvements for the future but they told me that they do not give feedback do to the reason that I may want to re-apply in the future (which I am allowed to do in 12 months). Overall, my experience was not great. In my opinion, GEICO's hiring process is outdated and unfair. I'm not a stupid person. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business (many of GEICO's workers don't have a Bachelor's degree), management experience, and a great work ethic. Did I do a great job in their fake scenarios? I feel I did the best I could given the amount of time was given, and the faulty boom-box and skippy CD I had to listen too. GEICO lost out on a great leader, great team player, and a hard worker. If I were GEICO, I would definitely think about taking a look at the hiring process and making improvements. I will now move forward and go work for a company that will appreciate what I bring to the table and benefit from what I have to offer.
