      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      21 Mar 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I interviewed at First Citizens Bank

      Interview

I applied to FCB through a referral. Recruiter reached out to me and told me to expect three rounds. • The first round was with a tech lead who tried to dig deeper into my background. Pretty simple since I was able to elaborate about it. He asked me to debug a code snippet, which IMO was not as straightforward as he thought it was. I flunked it but was still moved to the 2nd round. • Second round was with a Senior software engineer who asked me some system design questions. He was someone who had no idea how to conduct a tech interview. His statements and questions were extremely vague and confusing, and I was getting tired trying to answer his questions because he kept interrupting me. It didn’t go as well. • Still I was forwarded to the third round with a director. Recruiter told me it would be a behavioral round. The director instead again started asking me about my background. He was just as bad as the last round, was getting distracted easily and just would gloss over my answers to keep asking the same questions. Out of the blue he says that he does not think I can code. I was utterly confused because I didn’t write any code so far for him to draw that conclusion. • Recruiter then called me and said that there was confusion, director went off the script. Anyway he said that they wanted me to prove I can code. I was ok with it, and they scheduled a 4th round, with the same person who did the second round with me. • He asked me two questions, and I wrote the solution for both in my local textpad. He was a bit better than the last time, and out of all the rounds, I thought I did this one the best. • Recruiter then ghosted me even after I sent him two follow-up emails. This was one of the worst interviewing experiences I’ve ever had. Just lack of professionalism from recruiter and interviewers alike.
