      Sales Associate Interview

      9 Oct 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Express in Oct 2013

      Interview

I applied online one night and got a call the next day to set up an interview. I was in class and was unable to answer the phone so the manager left a message. When I called back we set up an interview for the very next day at 4:30. So the whole process took 3 days to actually apply, get called for the interview, and have the interview. It was probably so quick because it was in in October so they were hiring people for the upcoming holidays. When i applied online it didn't say anything about it being a seasonal position, it only said "sales associate" but I wasn't too surprised it was seasonal. The interview was at the store I applied to. I showed up 10 minutes earlier then the scheduled time. I had to wait about 10-15 minutes because the manager was busy interviewing another person. They had a lot of people scheduled for interviews that day. The interview was suppose to be a one on one, but since he was the only one interviewing, it was backed up. He decided to interview me and this other girl together which at first I was nervous about obviously because you have no idea who this other person is and what advantages they have on you, but it was easy and once we got into it I wasn't nervous at all. We were interview in the back of the store behind some registers that weren't being used. We were all standing up, which was the first interview i had that was like this but i feel like it was more relaxed and not super super professional. The manager interviewing us was really nice and friendly. He had our applications in his hand and the first thing he asked was for our references. I made sure that I had a hard copy of my resume with references on them to give to him, which made it a lot easier and he was happy about. He didn't talk about our availability, hours or pay which i thought was weird but we had all that written out on our applications so I guess there was no need to discuss it, and especially since it wasn't a private one on one. He had this like evaluation pad that he used to asks us questions and like grade us on our answers. He explained how he usually asked 10 questions but since he was doing 2 people at once he would do 5 questions each. (the questions will be in the next section!!) When we answered the questions he would like reply back and like make a conversation about it which was nice. He explained how the position we applied for is pretty much a seasonal position and he stressed how even though it was seasonal, if we do our job it is most likely they will keep us for good. He was explaining how we need to be able to talk to customer and not just fold clothes and sweep floors. He really wanted us to be able to sell and communicate with customers. He was very real with us and told it like it is which I liked. He said how express is a great place to work and that of we ever needed help we could always go to another employee or manager for advise. If we ever are in an uncomfortable situation we could go to someone (bec you know there are sometimes creeps that come in haha) he said how most employees had walky talkys so thats how they communicate. When we ended it he said how he really liked us both and that we would most likely get a call back for the job. He just needed to check our references. That is something that he said they take seriously is the references. The express was in the mall so i think the rule of having to actually check the referenced came from the mall not express because he was like "I know its annoying but i'm required to check them" And another thing, at the time of the interview I was still working at another job. Since i wasn't getting a lot of hours there I applied to express. The manager said that they are fine with me working two jobs but I just have to make sure that i try the best i can to work out the hours. So he was open about having two jobs. I didn't want to completely quit my other job to go to express because it was a seasonal position and it was guaranteed that I would work there even after the holidays. So for right now I am going to keep both jobs and see how it goes. As for hours he said we would really get no more then 25 hours a week. Im still waiting to get called to see if i got the position.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

He asked me and the other girl 5 questions. 2 of the were the same for both of us and the other 3 were different. He asked the other girl: what do you think the difference between making a sale and customer service is? He asked me: What would you do if you had to sell something to a customer that you rejected? He asked us both: Describe a time where you had a conflict or difficult time with another co worker or customer? And What did you dislike about your previous job? I really forget what else he asked us but it was nothing hard. All basic and really easy to answer.
