Interview
(1st red flag) Was contacted by recruiter as a $300k opportunity with salary and commission so I figured let's see what it's about. What's the old adage - if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is?
I doubt any of their sales reps are clearing $300k let alone $100k. I digress...
Had a Zoom meeting where they talk about day in the life, how much you get paid for selling somebody a $30-40k solar system, how they think they're the smartest guys in the room because they bundle - wait for it - home security systems and solar panels - I mean why didn't Jeff Bezos think of it first?? Don't really ask any questions about sales methodologies or experience selling, just what the requirements are for you as a sales rep. Nothing too difficult really.
(2nd red flag) They go into how they want to fast track you into management after 30 days - sounds like something I'd see on the front of a gas station in their 'now hiring' sign. Anybody that knows anything about business or just life can tell you that you're not going to learn something new, have success in it within 30 days, and be able to start managing people doing the task that you were just hired to do a month ago.
End of the call they open it up for questions and I was transparent about my current compensation relative to this role. I asked what the salary was? Pretty standard question when somebody is trying to hire you, you'd like to know how much you're getting paid for the work.
(3rd red flag)They just skirted around the topic of salary and never did give me a figure or even a range only that it would have to be cleared with the CEO. My guess is the salary is peanuts or they pay some kind of low hourly 'retail' wage that makes you a W-2 employee but the compensation is heavily commission based.
If you aren't already well along in your sales career, this could be a good opportunity to learn the ropes and by that I mean what jobs you don't want in the future - stay in school kids. They're just looking for warm bodies to run 'leads' and don't come across as a professional organization in the slightest.

Group interview, easy and painless. We got on a zoom call, they asked us all some questions and gave us a run down on the company and what to expect. The guys that were engaged and had strong answers stood out. You could tell who was really interested and who was just "looking". My advice is to not worry about anyone else, go in there and be yourself! They are looking for reps with personality and skills!
