I had two interviews. The first was with the CEO at the New Dorp office and lasted about an hour. During this interview, he spoke at length about how the bank had never had a marketing person and that he created this role to align with his vision and direction for the bank, with only a handful of questions asked of me. The second interview took place at the bank’s headquarters in Newburgh, NY, where I met with both the CEO and the President. This meeting also lasted about an hour, and I observed the CEO undermining the President by telling him, in front of me, that he couldn’t pursue the CEO role given the way things were currently run. After the second interview, I met with HR in her office, and she informed me that I got the job. About 2.5 weeks later, I received a formal offer via email. I was in my mid-20s at the time and, in hindsight, now recognize these as signs of unwell leadership. Later, I was contacted by the Head of Marketing who had served for a year under the first CEO. She reached out and connected with me, and in my view, she is very bright and creative.
