Application
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Economist Group (New York, NY) in Apr 2026
Interview
Good conversation with the recruiter based in London via video call. I got a strong sense of the role and the company culture.
I then had a call with the hiring manager. The conversation shifted quite a bit between broad topics, specific questions, and higher-level strategy, so at times it was a little hard to follow. That said, he came across as someone who would be great to work for.
The final stage included a presentation and panel interview. I didn’t end up getting an offer. It was definitely a challenging part and the guys put you under pressure, and looking back, there are things I would have prepared for differently, so I understand why they decided to move in another direction.
Overall, it was a positive experience, and I would apply again as they seem like a good company who have a decent product
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
- What is your understanding of the different functions within the economist
- Biggest sales to date
- Biggest sale I lost that should have won / what did I learn
One zoom interview with standard questions but could feel the recruiter was unprepared and disorganized. The call was difficult to follow as the recruiter had issues with his computer. In general it felt really unprofessional. I was excited to have a chance to work for The Economist as I have been reading it weekly for a long time but I was so disappointed by the general attitude of the recruiter and how this process was handled. For such a prestigious group, their HR person in London is really not what I was expecting and the general vibe was really disappointing. The lack of follow-up, the nonchalance and weird questions in some emails, not even mentioning the typos in my name, truly discouraged me and gave me a negative view on a company I used to love.
