      Data Scientist Interview

      24 Aug 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Deliveroo

      Interview

You have a talk with a recruiter followed by initial interview with a senior data scientist. If you make it past the initial interview you get a take-home task followed by a final round of interviews (2 case studies and a behavioral interview). The talk with the recruiter and initial interview with senior member of the data science team was fine. Recruiter sold the company well and outlined the process clearly. My main issue was with the take home task. You are given a dummy dataset along with a list of questions. First half of the task is theoretical while the second half is empirical. The format is fine but it’s the amount of work you have to put in at this stage in the process was excessive. No clear instruction was given on how long it was supposed to take. All in all I spent about 5 full working days on the task. Other big players in industry provide compensation for the take home part of the interview too. My advice once you get to the take home task is to spend no more than 2 days of it (long weekend thing). In the end, you aren’t being compensated so your labor isn’t worth anything to them at this point.

Hi - thanks for taking the time to write about your experience. I'm sorry to hear about the issues you faced during the interview process. It's clear that we didn't meet our usual standards . The delays and lack of clear communication were not intentional and I'm sorry for any stress or uncertainty this may have caused. Would you mind dropping me an email so I can look into this further, and try in some small way to make it up to you? jamie.edwards+glassdoor@deliveroo.co.uk

      Interview

Straight forward process but very long and arduous with plenty of stages. I'd say it needs to be refined. Interviewers were very professional and rapport building was easy. I would suggest cutting down on the numerous steps in the interview

      Interview

Very long process, 6 interviews and a take home task before being rejected. Brief of the task said don't overcomplicate it but the feedback I received was that I still didn't go into enough detail. So be prepared to spend a lot of time for the interviews. Generally friendly interviewers and easy interview questions, very straight forward standard a/b testing and causal inference questions. Despite this was rejected, would have brushed up on my domain knowledge in retrospect as I probably wasn't very clear answering causal inference questions to a product very different to my experience. The sql test was very easy and I completed all questions correctly, but got some negative feedback on this as I wasn't familiar with postgresql quirks around dates which they marked me down on.
