      Service Desk Analyst Interview

      9 Aug 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portsmouth, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at DMI Companies (Portsmouth, VA) in Aug 2022

      Interview

The interview process was typical at the beginning, but was abysmal by the end. For reference I am a male person. I was referred the position by a recruiting firm. They handled speaking with HR and negotiating interview appointments. My current position is remote, so I requested a hybrid schedule if possible, that was declined. I stated I was still interested as the onsite experience is valuable. Firstly was a basic teams video call/phone screening. That call went really well. I had my camera on and my face was well visible. Dressed business casual, but kept my earring studs visible as they are something I normally where in office along with required dress level. Basic black studs (this is important for later). A few technical questions and background questions were asked with some regard to customer service skills and communication skills. Interviewer was the System/Network Administrator that I would be reporting to and the CTO. The admin was visible via teams video, the CTO did not have their camera enabled. The only issue it seemed during the call was the CTO was hung up on the fact that I requested a hybrid schedule if possible. I assured them that it would not implicate things, as it was an inquiry, not a requirement for me. I was then met with an onsite interview with their CTO and the same administrator. They attempted to schedule the interview very short notice, however it was rescheduled the following week. This is where it fell apart. I was 20 minutes early, but only waited a few minutes upon being welcomed into the building by an office worker. It was not apparent it was the reception, as that very same worker vanished after briefly welcoming me to a waiting area (small couch in front of very same door I came in from). This was their factory they intended on me working at. I was greeted by the CTO, they then escorted me to the conference room for the interview. I sat down at the center of the large conference table, and they sat opposite. The admin joining us via video feed remotely. At the beginning of the interview the admin stated he had a list of technical interview questions, but forgotten them at home, and was thus forced to think of on the spot questions. They started with asking me how the commute was. I stated it was a quick drive and that was more pleasant than anticipated. I noted the only con was the $2 toll each way, otherwise its more than double the commute time around that toll. The CTO pointed that out that yes there was a con to the commute. I replied and stated confirmed yes its con against the commute. I could tell he was unhappy from the start of this interview with me. Some scenarios were drawn up and questioned asked regarding network configurations. I attempted to answer them the best I could and where my troubleshooting would start. Some questions regarding vlans, printer network troubleshooting, were thrown together and I did my best to answer them fully. However at the end of the technical questions I stated my network experience was limited. They were taken aback and stated that I stressed that I had a strong networking background. I insisted that was not the case. They changed footing and challenged me to state my strongest background. I stated hardware has always been a strong point. I then answered a simple server memory configuration question. That was the end of technical questions. Shortly after, the CTO asked a question regarding my earrings. He stated I would not be allowed to wear them in office. I assumed that it was because this was a metalwork factory and stated I am comfortable wearing plastic retainers; for working hazards if needed. He stated no, not allowed across the board. No such jewelry allowed. I stated that I have been wearing them in office at other companies, in professional settings. No offices had made a single comments in past. I was very close to ending the interview and walking out. I remained professional, and continued the interview. Shortly after that very uncomfortable moment the CTO noted there was an on-call schedule. He made a assuming statement that I did not want to be on an on-call schedule. I stated I was not aware of there being one. I later verified the job description did not have an on-call requirement with the recruiting firm. I inquired about the on-call schedule. I found it to be one of the more reasonable ones with great overtime potential. I was also informed that its normal to log 50 hour work weeks. I then asked about the required certs, they only wanted to reimburse costs. I stated I had no further questions. It was very clear from reading this person's tone and attitude they had already judged me prior to the interview questioning. Either based on appearances or the questions that lead up to the on site interview. I did not allow for a response on the opportunity. I contacted the recruiting firm and gave them the full details that I have written here and stated I did not want the position.
