Senior Ruby On Rails Architect Interview

      23 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Bucharest, Bucuresti
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Crossover for Work (Bucharest, Bucuresti) in Feb 2017

      Interview

I knew about the job opening as I've seen it on stackoverflow.com/jobs and I did a bit of research and decided not to apply because of the negative reviews I've read online . At some point I've been contacted by a crossover recruiter and she managed to convince me to apply . The first part of the interview was an online test with multiple choices that you needed to finish in one hour (I think there were 30 questions if I remember correctly) but you were encouraged to finish in half the time , the test covered css , html , javascript , sql ... Some of the questions were very poorly formulated and some were really subjective , each correct question was valued with 5 point and you needed at least 80 points to pass . After finishing the test (I've scored 105 or 115 can't remember exactly but I was in the first 10%) you could see the leaderboard and the maximum score was 125 out of 150, I think this a good indication that 5 question were wrong . After passing the test I was assigned with a project that I needed to finish in 7 days , the project was pretty simple but I've made some bad decision on choosing which client side framework to use and it took me a couple of extra days to finish the project (I managed to finish it in 7 days) , I think I've lost 3-4 days troubleshooting some issues I've had with backbone.js handling the events . The project requirements were to create a support ticket website with 2 types of users , normal users and support agents , It was a basic CRUD with 2 kinds of resources (tickets , users) I've received a response from them after about one week from the submission deadline and it informed me that my score was to low and I couldn't continue to the last interview. These were the reasons I received - Design document with technologies and components briefly described - Design document with few diagrams - Demo without voice - Poor exception handling - Bad modularity - Small level of patterns usage - Small level of code abstractions usage - Some requirements missing: Incomplete user management for 'Admin' users, cannot create new users

Thank you for taking the time to write us a feedback. We are sorry that our recruitment process did not meet your standards. I understand how frustrating it is to be doing the tests for several days. In Crossover, we administer the tests to be able to filter the applicants who among them is part of the 1%. Though your time might not be now to be part of Crossover, I encourage you to try it out again in the future. If there are things that you wish for us to improve on, please feel free to send it to feedback@crossover.com.
