      Senior Data Scientist Interview

      13 Sept 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Credit Karma in Aug 2025

      Interview

The process was long and tedious. First, a recruiter screen. Second, a manager screen where he asked high-level questions related to my experience. I passed this. Third, there was a technical screen with 1 DSA question and another SQL question. I passed this as well. Fourth, there was a virtual "technical on-site" which consisted of 3 rounds. 1 round was an ML fundamentals round, another round was an MLOps system design, and finally, a statistics round. I passed this as well. Fifth, I had a "functional on-site" which was basically 2 rounds of interviews with managers. They asked behavioral questions related to collaboration, communication, leadership, vision, technical skills, etc. I passed this as well. 1 of the interviewers explicitly mentioned that he loved the conversation he had and looks forward to me joining the company. You guessed it right, I passed this as well. Sixth, I had a final round with the "hiring manager" (that's what I was told). She gave 2 case studies and went into great detail on the technical aspects of ranking and recommendation models. I was not able to answer some of the questions and maybe went in the wrong direction in one of them.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Credit Karma (Oakland, CA) in Sept 2025

      Interview

I interviewed at Credit Karma in September, and the process continued for about 2 months. The recruiter was mostly unresponsive, but the scheduling team was prompt. The process included Recruiter screen, HM screen with ML basics and some technical question to understand my background, Coding and ML basic screen, one technical onsite with three 45 mins rounds, including ML Ops, ML basic and Case study round. I cleared all the interviews so far and then there was a functional onsite round with two 45 minutes behavioral rounds where there director came in and asked me about a particular case study related to recommendation system. First of all it was supposed to be a behavioral round but she went into doing a case study and I was ok with it and answered her question well and then came in a hiring manager who seemed to be lost and felt absent in the start of the interview. He was not even able to understand my project which I offered to explain more but he rejected the idea. Anyway, except for the final supposedly behavioral rounds all my interviews went well and I did pretty well on technical and some behavioral rounds. I felt the process was so long and seemed like they were not genuinely trying to hire good people. Also, other post about similar experience corroborates the fact that these people are trying to filter out good candidates and I would 100% agree with the earlier feedback.

      12 Oct 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Credit Karma in Oct 2021

      Interview

Hadn't heard of CK beforehand- was approached on LinkedIn. Responsive, and conscious that I was interviewing with others and likely to receive an offer soon, they fast-tracked the interview process to accommodate - took about a week. Overall, it was a positive experience even though we both decided it wasn't a fit for various reasons. They gave me very thorough feedback from the interview as well. In my experience, how a company treats you in the interview process is how it will treat you while there.
