      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Core Geologic (New York, NY)

      Interview

In case you want additional details, I've put a very detailed recount on Reddit in r/geologycareers. Interviewed with president of company. He lied about the schedule for the position and said they used to have people come in for a few days to go through their training but that they don't do that anymore because he wasn't sure if it was illegal. Said I'd hear from operations manager to discuss further. When I had my phone interview with the ops manager, he was 15 minutes late to the scheduled call and it was pretty clear he had not even bothered looking at my resume. He also seemed fairly put off by the fact that he had to even talk to me. After talking to him for probably 5 minutes he went on to tell me I'd have to come into their office in Houston for 14 days to shadow their geosteerers, learn to do reports, and just generally prove that I knew how to geosteer before I was even hired. FOURTEEN DAYS OF 12 HOUR SHIFTS OF UNPAID WORK AND TRAINING! Then the ops manager told me what the real schedule would be and how it wasn't at all flexible like president told me. I was so disgusted by the president and ops manager by the end of my 2nd interview that I cut it short and told him that the deal didn't seem as sweet as I was originally lead to be and that I was no longer interested. For the record, this was a bait and switch type of experience and unpaid training/work of any kind is illegal in all 50 states. Proceed with caution with this company. This is the type of company that takes advantage of people that have pretty low self-esteem due to layoffs, because layoffs are just the nature of this industry, and are desperate for any work they can get. If they operate outside the law with their employees, you can be sure it bleeds into all other facets of the company.
