I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at CarMax in May 2021
Interview
As others have posted, an overly complex personality test followed by a timed math test after the initial application. Recruiters are responsive. An initial 30-minute touch base, followed a week later by an hour long case study (the infamous bridge problem detailed in another review), followed by a full day of interviews - 3 x 1.25 hour case studies, 1 x hour long behavioral, 1 x 30 minute fit. The day long interview is ridiculous, and was only confirmed with one day notice, requiring a mid-week vacation day. An unacceptable turnaround time with a fulltime job, and I get the whole stress test thing, but surely the behavioral and fit could be broken out to separate days to make sure applicants time is respected. Although kind, most of the interviewers do not seem that into the process.
Questions included so you don't waste your time with a full day of interviews.
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
This question is timed, the interviewer will eventually come back and work through the file with you, but they do not tell you that before leaving. I made a mistake in my calculations and didn’t go back as I thought the timer was a hard limit.
1 You make 100 total loans. For each low risk customer you charge $30 a per month in interest, and for each high risk customer you charge $235 per month in interest.
1a) Personally, how many of these 100 loans would you target to assign to low, medium, and high risk? Why?
1B) Assume you chose a 40/30/30 split of Low/Medium/High risk customers. Customers pay the same amount of interest every month for three years. Loan values are given blow, and you assume that 2 low risk, 6 medium risk, and 7 high risk customers never make a payment. The remaining customers all make their payments. How much monthly interest must you charge the Medium risk customers to break even
Loan amounts – Low Risk - $12,000
Medium Risk - $20,000
High Risk – 25,000
2.) You gather characteristics to help with the decision process
2A Create a rule that inputs some of the below characteristics and outputs a decision / low / medium / high risk or decline. The rule set should contain if then statements (7 applicants are listed with a range of values in the these categories: Loan Amount | Monthly Income | Co-Applicant | Mortgage | Use of Credit | Length at Current Job | Age of Vehicle
2B How does this rule set apply to the sample applications. Fill in the decision column in the table.

- Customers per hour: 1.0 / weekday, 1.5/weekend
- Prez club convert 20% of customers to buyers
-21,100 cars per week across all locations are sold each week
-All consultants work 40 hours a week
A) How many hours do Prez club associates work each weekday & weekend? (45000 for all weekdays, 4000 weeekends)
B) How many hours do non-prez club associates work? (55,000 for all weekdays 36000 for all weekends)
C) What is the conversion rate for non-prez associates? (Ends up being 10%)
D) How many cars are sold by Prez and non prez club members each week / weekend
E) If we make the prez club evenly distributed across the week (7,000 hours/day) what can we expect the difference in sales to be?
F) Final answer is ~ a 2.5% increase in sales, which they would like you to point out is a significant increase to the bottom line. They do not want you to discuss the potential for cherry picking days, morale hits, or other externalities. You may be able to bring this up after the fact, but they want you to hit on the bottom line first.
Standard behavioral, they will e-mail you a template of Carmax values before the interview. Have an example that aligns with each, although they disguise them slightly.
