      Product Manager Interview

      20 Mar 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at Capital One

      Interview

Recruiter is great. They're personable and want you to succeed. I wish I could list their name, but they have been such a joy to work with and Capital One is so lucky to have this individual. 1. After the recruiter screening, the first interview is a 1 hour mini case with a senior level product person. You'll get a list of few products before the interview to prep beforehand. Know the ins and outs from a customer experiences and the areas of opportunity from a product perspective. You're expected to know how to read through data and talk out loud any patterns/insights you see. You'll also be asked how to solve product pain point and know the technology behind it (databases, etc). 2. Power Day. The recruiter will provide you a packet and also have an hour call with you to go over the process. It is about 4 hours with each hour being dedicated to a different topic: product skills, product design, job fit, and consultant/analyst. The consultant/analyst case study was probably the most challenging. It's not a skill that PMs need to flex but it seems like it's Capital One's way to weed people out. This is unfortunate, since they are missing out on wonderful data driven product managers. Interviewers are reading off a script. It was obvious with one of the interviewers that they didn't want to be there. This left a bad taste in my mouth. Granted these individuals are senior level leaders. They probably don't want to be interviewing people and rather focus on other priorities. This attitude is a pattern based on previous Glassdoor reviews. If you have interviewers who are more neutral/have a positive energy, then it's easier to work with. If you have interviewers who obviously don't care, then you'll need to work with that attitude. I had a mix of both. Like a recent reviewer said, if you do well on on a majority of your interviews, but fluke on 1 interview, then you don't pass this round. They don't tell you which part you failed, since that's "confidential." It’s obvious by the interviewers’ body language and tone which ones you passed/failed. Tips: -Always show your work throughout the interviews -Talk through your thinking process and ask clarifying questions -For the product skills: pick one product. Know the ins and out of your product experience including the tech stack. -Practice product behavioral questions you can find online. -For the product design-pick a painpoint and make sure to be clear what your MVP will be solving and how you'd measure it -For the case study, there are videos online via Capital One and you'll have to google breakeven, profit case studies. -Be succinct in your answer and follow the STAR method.

      Question 1

-questions about what you're doing to expand your product skills, what you're proud of, and challenges you've experienced with your product. -product design case: dmv.

      Interview

The interview process was smooth overall. It started with a computer screening, followed by a 30-minute recruiter call focused on my experience and fit with Capital One. Then I had a one-hour “money case” discussing a Capital One product from different angles. I’ve now moved to the PowerDay round, which includes two product cases, one product skills round, and one product discovery round.
