      Chemist Interview

      29 Aug 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Menlo Park, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at CSBio (Menlo Park, CA) in Aug 2016

      Interview

Weirdest interview I've had yet. Starts with a phone screening, if you could call it that. Person sounds very sarcastic and asks a random series of questions, ranging from "tell me about an experiment you did in college." to "what's your favorite thing about chemistry?" After that, you could receive a call to come in for an in-person interview that same day or 2 weeks later. 3 people will talk to you, starting with the exact same girl you talked to on the phone who will ask meaningless spirit animal questions. Then came the next guy who will be anxious to immediately berate you. Kept throwing curveball questions and mocked my answers. Once he's done, a woman with an incredibly thick accent will ask like 2 questions, and then talk about the job (I think). In general, be wary of places without an HR department. This was not just unprofessional, but I don't know how it's legal. Keep looking elsewhere. Believe in yourself, you're not this desperate. Biotech is hard to crack into. My confidence shot up reading about the people punched in the face here.

      Question 1

What are you looking for in this position? What are some amino acids you know? What is your spirit animal?

      Average interview

      Application

The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at CSBio (Menlo Park, CA) in Feb 2017

      Interview

Met with three personnel - asked very general questions, professional and informal. First one was more relax, high energy, second moderate/mediocre, third one stern, rude, and boundary challenged (inappropriate personality for manufacturing - go do research)

      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Interview

I applied to the chemistry internship on their website and got a call for an initial phone screening which was really: what is your desired pay / are you authorized to work in the US etc. They kept delaying my interview slot but the timeline between my first and second interview was 2 days. 2 interview screenings. The first interview session consisted of meeting 3 people from 3 different departments within the R&D. Each person will gauge your understanding of the chemistry/biology of peptides as well as ask questions to get to know the candidate better. All three people are nice and be prepared to explain lab experiments or projects that you list on your resume. They do not follow a guideline of questions so be ready for anything. One of the 3 people was sorta rude and unprofessional in that he will interrupt you when you are answering a question. He was also looking at his phone...Like really....After meeting with all 3 people, you will rank which department you would be most interested in. The second interview is not guaranteed for everyone. The second interview is a personal meeting with the COO/CEO of the company. The interview is almost the same as the first interview as the COO evaluates your skills and value to the company. The COO will typically go through how CS Bio operates and why they typically offer lower compensation rates than other peer companies. (I personally liked how transparent the COO was being b/c he actually wanted me to understand how things operate within the company) If the COO likes what he sees, he will most likely offer you the position on the spot. He will NOT give the candidate time to think about the offer so make sure you know going into the interview if you will accept the offer or not. Overall, my interview experience here was okay. Based on the negative company reviews, I thought this place would be a mess, but I can see the company is really trying to structure itself better. The internship salary is $13/hr non-negotiable and once you move out of the internship to Full Time, there is generally a $2 increase, so $15....The internship is meant as a way to bring in employees to the company, so if you are a fresh grad looking for entry lvl, you will most likely start out at the internship and then graduate onto a full time position.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

First interview Q's: Give me 3 words to describe yourself? What is your spirit animal? Tell me what you know about peptides (chemistry / structure / R groups whatever) Do you know what this company does? Can you explain to me "This experiment/project" on your resume? Second Interview Q's: Have you heard of glassdoor? What do you think of those negative reviews? Why are you interested in this internship? Tell me a little about yourself?
