Phone interview was with hiring manager. The questions were technically appropriate to the position. The second round was onsite and sequential. The hiring manager was first. Questions were again targeted and competency based. Met with internal client. Again, questions were straight-forward and to the point. Met with other members of the team, and those questions were structured more like what one would see in an online domain certification test. Also, many were out-of-scope for the role. Then the weird: A member of the "old guard" was last, didn't even introduce himself. He wasn't on the interview schedule.
He didn't even work for the team, or -- from what i was told -- interact with them. I had no idea why he was interviewing me and never did find out. I had to ask what he did at the firm. Questions were softballs. I got the impression that, as a member of the old guard, this participant's job was to determine some mystical "fit" or "look" or some other qualitative compatibility criteria. I should add, the role for which i applied has been open for more than a year. There were questions in the recruiter's mind about the firm's sincerity in hiring for the position, particularly after they did not engage me.
