      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Brother USA

      Interview

The process started out great. I applied online and when I first spoke to the recruiter, she seemed nice, helpful, and enthusiastic. However, beyond the hiring manager phase, she didn't seem to know all the steps in the process, other than the fact that there wasn't a hands-on technical round (extremely rare for this role). She also asked me why I was interested in working at Brother. I then spoke with the hiring manager and it was similar -- nice, enthusiastic, professional, but also didn't know what all the steps were. She thought I'd likely speak with a Data Engineer and be asked some SQL questions. I then moved on to the last two rounds which were two panel interviews: one was with the director of Data Analytics (hiring manager's boss) and a manager of a Data Analytics team, and the second was with another manager of Data Analytics and someone from HR. However, I still had no information about what these interviews were going to cover, so I e-mailed the recruiter and got no response. So I figured I'd review some SQL and behavioural-type questions, given the limited information I had. Anyway, no one asked me any SQL, although one of the managers asked me to describe gradient descent to a non-technical audience, which I was unprepared for since I hadn't thought much about gradient decent in years and didn't expect to be asked any in-the-weeds Data Science questions given the limited information I had and the job titles of the folks on the panel. Most of the other questions were a mix of behavioural and about my experience, with the exception of the HR person. With her, it didn't seem like we were having a conversation. It was more like she had a list of questions she was required to ask me and didn't care about my responses. She asked me TWICE why I was interested in working for Brother -- so now I'd been asked this a total of three times. Anyway, the whole thing didn't go super well in the end. I heard nothing from the recruiter for about two weeks, then I got an e-mail saying, "While we are still interviewing, some of the candidates we have identified seem to be a better overall match to our needs at this point." I hope this process is more organized for those other candidates.
