      Equity Research Associate Interview

      18 Jun 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Milwaukee, WI
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Baird (Milwaukee, WI) in Oct 2015

      Interview

HR will do a screening interview with you and also ask you to take a 20 question online multiple-choice test titled Baird Research Candidate Evaluation. If HR likes you, you'll get a phone interview with a senior analyst. If the analyst likes you, you get invited to Baird's super day. For the super day, you'll get to have dinner Thursday night with other candidates and Baird's analysts. Friday is the interview day. It's sort of circuit where you meet 20 minutes with one analyst and then rotate offices and interview with another analyst. Lunch will be provided along with a PowerPoint show describing how Baird is like the Goldman's of the Midwest. At the end of the day, Baird has you take the same 20 question multiple test that you took online prior, but now you take in a conference room. After the test and another 30 minute lecture on why Baird is better then UBS, Deutsche, and so on, you will be invited to a happy hour at a local bar to drink with other candidates and members of Baird's office.

      Interview questions [5]

      Question 1

Charlie is now one-half Pat’s age. In four years, Charlie will be two-thirds Pat’s age. Three years ago, Pat was one year older than Charlie is now. How old is Charlie now? You have a bucket of jelly beans. Some are red, some are blue, some are yellow, and some are green. With your eyes closed, you begin to pick jelly beans from the bucket. How many do you need to grab to be sure that you have at least three of the same (random) color? If three typists can type three pages total in three minutes, how many typists will it take to type 27 pages in nine minutes?

      Question 2

You just completed your first semester of sophomore year. Suppose your overall GPA is now 3.4 (equal number of 3-credit classes each semester). You had 5 classes for the semester and your semester GPA was 3.2 – you scored two A’s, a B, and a C. What was your grade in the other class? What was your cumulative GPA at the end of your freshman year? Your parents tell you that they will buy you a car for graduation if you graduate with a final GPA of 3.6 or higher. What is the minimum average GPA you will need for the remainder of the semesters to get a new car?

      Question 3

A monk has a very specific ritual for climbing up the steps to the temple. First he climbs up to the middle step and meditates for 1 minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and faces east until he hears a bird singing. Then he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one step up and tosses the pebble over his left shoulder. Now, he walks up the remaining steps three at a time which only takes him 9 paces. How many steps are there? You are the coach of a basketball team, trying to assess your players’ free throw shooting accuracy. Your two guards each average 60%, but only have 20 attempts each. Your two forwards shoot 70% and each have 40 attempts. Your center is a phenomenal free throw shooter, averaging 90% and because of her aggressive style of play, she has 80 attempts on the season. What is your team’s free throw shooting average?

      Question 4

Assume you are running two companies: · Company A has a revenue of $9,000, variable costs of 30% of revenue, and fixed costs of $7,000. · Company B has a revenue of $9,000, variable costs of 90% of revenue, and fixed costs of $1,000. Which company has a better profit and by how much? If revenue at both companies grew to $100,000, which would then be more profitable and by how much? Finally, at what revenue levels are both Company A and B equally profitable?
      Answer question

      Question 5

There are four ants at four corners of a square. They all start moving toward another random corner at the same speed and travel along one side (only along the sides of the square – not diagonally). What is the probability that there is not a collision? Round to the nearest 0.25%.
