Applied online pretty standard very simple. Next I was given a week or so to complete a scenario test and after that numerical and logical reasoning tests. They give you around two weeks for these numerical and logical reasoning. They pretty much tell you if you've passed within a day or so. After that I didn't hear for a while until I got an email saying I would have a phone interview and then attend an assessment centre. The phone interview wasn't really an interview it was more a briefing on the assessment centre day and was only asked one question "Why Nuclear?".
The assessment centre was in the Bristol office from 10.00 to 3.30 and there were 7 candidates. It started with a briefing followed by a 45 minute technical skills test consisting of 3 civil engineering questions: Finding BM/SF of a beam in a structure, drawing BM/SF on an indeterminate portal frame and a written section on construction process (prefab v in-situ). This was pretty time pressured and I barely started the last question. My advice would be to go well over the basics and not worry so much about numbers and focus on the general theory and concepts.
After that we were split into groups with others going for their technical interview. The group I was part of performed a softer skills test, writing a report on missing baggage at an airport detailing possible causes for the issues. It was hand written which I found particularly difficult as my hand writing is like a child's.
We then had a group exercise. The task was to choose 1 of 3 cities to invest infrastructure services. My advice for this would be to straight away be the one who sets out meetings structure. In a group discussion where you have 7 people all trying to get there point of view across topics and discussion points can change very quickly. By being the one who sets out a structure you can keep the meeting on task, which obviously is what the assessors want and makes you stand out. One of other guys who had worked in civil of a few years before changing to nuclear did this very effectively and I would bet he got the job.
After this there was a presentation from the head of nuclear. Then a 1:1 technical interview where they reviewed your test answers. The interview was relaxed and informal. They just asked you to go over the areas you went wrong and do them again while asking other questions around the topic. Again go over your basics for example I completely about forgot concrete slab cracking patterns. They also go through your CV and ask you various pretty standard questions.
Overall I really enjoyed the day. I got on really well with the other candidates and they were a great bunch of guys and girls. Also all the Engineers and the HR people are great and very welcoming. The only negative so far is that Atkins are a little withholding on feedback and won't give me any until 2/3 months after the interview! Otherwise great. Hope this helps anyone applying and I wish you the best of luck.
