I submitted my application by the end of my first academic year, but I didn't get a call back, until July or August, when the graduating/transferring tutors were leaving. My interview was so I could work starting Fall semester. In my interview I was asked couple of conceptual math questions to confirm a firm understanding of basic algebra fundamentals.
