      IT Manager Interview

      6 Mar 2011
      Anonymous employee
      Washington, DC
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Amtrak (Washington, DC) in May 2009

      Interview

I was a contractor, so I applied to the position via an internal referral. The interview process is standard; I was interviewed by three managers. The questions were typical, perhaps a couple I didn't expect but was not an issue. Overall the process of being interviewed and hired can be an extensive one; it was for me. It can take about three to four weeks. Mine took almost two months. It is worth it though - being an employee of the railroad corporation has good benefits including an additional railroad retirement fund.

      Question 1

What typical software and/or tools do you use and why? {This was a question towards the end of the interview - it is not hard, but your answer will be evaluated)

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Amtrak (Washington, DC) in Aug 2019

      Interview

The questions are kind of read out from any trivial HR book that bears no relevance to the job role and necessary skills. Panelists hardly engaged in any conversation other than reading out the questions and kept busy typing the response in their notebooks. I felt like talking to a wall and extremely uncomfortable. I'm glad I wasn't offered as anyone with generic HR skills can crack this kind of interview and my IT skills wouldn't stand out in the actual job if that's the expectation from this role.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What's the mission statement of your organization and how do you emphasize on that statement in your daily activities to cascade the same to your team?

      Interview

interviewed with the senior operations and IT team. Information about the organization, operation, recent transactions, and the people came handy. Need to have straight forward answers to most trivial questions and be thoughtful yet responsive to not-so-trivial questions. Need to show enthusiasm and interest in the organization and position and convey that. Also need to convey you ability to have immediate impact in the organization.
