I applied online. I interviewed at American Chemical Society (Washington, DC) in Aug 2025
Interview
I applied for the role of People Ops Mgr and got an email from the Recruiter with a couple of weeks who scheduled an initial chat via Zoom. I always look at Glassdoor reviews before taking an interview and theirs were pretty bad. I do tend to take many comments with a grain of salt, and in this case I figured though that for such a huge organization, there's bound to be unhappy staff who definitely tend to be much more vocal than the happy ones, so I chose to proceed. On the call he didn't turn on his camera which I thought was very strange, also just the vibe was a bit off, and he overall just came off a bit aloof if I'm being honest. I chalked it up to it being later in the day, and him possibly being in so many interviews that he was just a bit tired. I've recruited before and I know how it can be, so I gave grace. During the call he mentioned that the hiring manager had personally flagged my resume along with 4 others, so I felt pretty optimistic. He messaged me after the call and asked if I could complete a skills assessment, which was to share two work samples. I spent about an hour tailoring my samples so no private or company data was showing, then I submitted everything back to him via email. And I then never heard from him again. Not even an automated rejection email. I even reached out after a couple of days had passed with no reply just to ensure he actually got my email. It's one thing to ghost candidates, that's bad enough, but ghosting after having them spend time on a skills assessment is just so insanely inconsiderate. So yeah, beware. And maybe take the Glassdoor reviews more seriously than I did.
