      Store Manager Interview

      3 May 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
Middleton, Lancashire, North West England, England
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at ALDI (Middleton, Lancashire, North West England, England) in Apr 2012

      Interview

Initally saw the advertisement in the ALDI store and went on to apply online. The interview consisted of a group interview (25 people). The interviewer divided 25 people to 5 different group. There was a group task. Then there was sell me type presentation, where the interviewer assigned the group a product to sell to him. Then there was a quick 10 minutes mathematical aptitude test, the level of it was of below GCSE level. After that the final round was question and answer session, where anyone can answer questions asked by the interview. The questions were specifically aimed at ALDI business model, store management etc. Finally an opportunity was given to ask questions to interviewer. The job was not interesting because of very low salary (starting £23,000) and reaching maximum of £30,000 after 3 years. The interviewer clearly mentioned that there would be no promotion in this job. In his word, this is the glass ceilings. Physical and mental strength also needed to carry out this job. The promotion within the company are only given to college graduates who joined the company as Area Manager.

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at ALDI in Dec 2025

      Interview

The interview process felt impersonal and poorly structured. The first step required recording video responses to generic questions with very limited time, which felt rushed and disconnected. After advancing, I completed a phone interview with a Senior HR Representative who emphasized having over 20 years of retail experience. Unfortunately, the experience did not reflect that level of professionalism. The audio setup made it difficult to hear clearly, and the tone throughout the call came across as disengaged and occasionally condescending. Given the emphasis on tenure, I expected clearer communication and a more candidate-focused approach. When asking questions, responses were often vague or redirected back as questions, offering little clarity. The overall lack of structure, enthusiasm, and clear communication made this portion of the process unnecessarily uncomfortable. In contrast, I went in-person and spoke to the Management Team who were professional, engaging, and a complete turnaround. They were more aligned with the company’s brand and expectations. Overall, the HR interview stage did not represent the organization well and could discourage qualified candidates before they ever reach the final interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The HR representative focused narrowly on one aspect of my background, and the conversation never progressed into situational or role-related questions. I was not asked about leadership style, work ethic, or how I would handle job-relevant scenarios, and the call concluded shortly after with a general prompt asking if I had any questions.
