Pros
I worked at Sunrise Senior Living for 5 years. Although my employment ended due to termination, I want to highlight some of the positive aspects that stood out during my time with the company.
One of the major strengths of Sunrise Senior Living is their commitment to continuous training. They provide employees with the resources to develop and enhance their skills, which is incredibly valuable not only for growth within the company but also in applying those skills to other career paths, particularly in industries like healthcare.
Additionally, Sunrise offers ample opportunities for growth within the organization. The corporate culture is fair.
Cons
While the company offered continuous training and the opportunity for growth, there were several significant issues.
One of the major concerns I encountered was the inconsistency in management. At times, management seemed to be either stagnant and resistant to change or completely inexperienced, both of which created a challenging environment for employees. Despite being with the company for years, I only received one performance review, and my final termination came unexpectedly via a text message & phone call while I was on vacation, which felt unprofessional and dismissive.
Unfortunately, the issues didn’t stop with management. There were serious concerns regarding how residents were treated. The staff was often disrespectful to seniors, and I witnessed incidents where residents were denied basic needs, such as access to water, because of unfounded health concerns. In some cases, residents were made to wear two adult undergarments to minimize staff workload, which was particularly troubling in the memory care neighborhood. I witnessed verbal abuse on a daily basis.
When I attempted to raise these concerns with management, I was met with retaliation. The staff became increasingly hostile, and the mistreatment of residents only worsened. Despite my attempts to have family members voice concerns, many were too scared of the potential backlash, and management often argued with families to deflect accountability.
For anyone considering a role here, I strongly advise you to think twice if you value ethics, compassion, or a healthy work-life balance. The culture here can be toxic, and the lack of respect for both employees and residents creates a difficult and sometimes heartbreaking atmosphere.
