How do employees feel about Meijer's policy around taking breaks?

      Meijer reviews

      Not for me

      Pros

Can grab groceries when your shift is over. Will be busy entire shift so time may fly by faster.

      Cons

Truly a job and not a career. When I first started I thought that working in the deli would be a fun work experience and a way to pay my bills. It wasn't. We were always short handed, rarely had slow time to restock or clean anything and God forbide someone called in during a busier day like Sunday. Management was more concerned about telling us what to do and not helping us. My manager flat out told me that she couldn't help me slice meat for customers because "it's a union job." I'll never forget being short handed on a Sunday and looking over to see our deli manager standing next to the head of the food department making small talk while we had 17 people with tickets waiting to be helped. The pressure to hurry up and assist the customers knowing we'd get no help from management was just the tip of the iceberg and the final nudge I needed to put in my two weeks. Meijers was also pretty strict with the break policy- and by break I'm referring to the half-hour unpaid lunch. They would crack down and make demands that we took that despite being overwhelmed with work. The 15 minute paid break-of course they were fine if you skipped it. If they pay you for it you might as well work right. The hardest thing for me taking a break was the guilt from leaving my coworker to fend for themselves. I'm not saying my experience is what everyone experienced. I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed being employed there. For me, it took a serious toll on my mental health. I dreaded going in, and I was so exhausted by the time I left. It made me incredibly bitter, and I didn't realize how miserable I had become until one day i noticed all I did was complain to my friends about how much I hated Meijers. I've moved on and am no longer work there, but I think about some of my coworkers who are still there. Some of them put in so many years that they are just counting down until retirement. I hope they are doing okay. There was a quote by Frederick Meijer. I think he was the founder of the company. They had it hanging up by the service desk, and it said something along the lines of "a managers job to help those under them succeed." I agree 1000% but everytime I saw that sign it would make my blood boil. To anyone looking to work at Meijer maybe you will have a great time. Everyone's different, different locations have different managers and maybe you'll have the time of your life. I would just recommend keeping an eye on the door if they start dragging you down and not end up as a lifer. There's more out there, and you deserve better. Thanks.

Starts off great but got burnt out

      Pros

Starts off great when you are new and the store is clean and bright. Most employers are nice and try to relate to you as a person most of the time.

      Cons

Once you are crossed trained, you get a bit burnt out as you are now in a position of being able to cover many breaks in different positions and never know if you will stay in the same spot. Worst place to be is the self checkout. There is Grocery and GM (general merchandise) self checkouts (just means the areas they are at, not that you can only purchase those kind of items) the worst one to be at is Grocery as there are 13 registers and should have 2 or 3 attendants there to assist customers. Due to understaffing, there will be days where there is 1 person by themselves. I was that person many times and even on my first Black Friday there. I was surprised I didn’t quit that day. Self checkout also has people who can fill their carts up to the brim and checkout there and we need to keep an eye on them for any assistance. Breaks are forgotten about unless you ask and scheduling is all over the place. I can never get a weekend off after working so many weekends before as they are super busy and I’ve been available then from school. I now work after school anyways and so I thought I need at least a day where I didn’t have to worry about going anywhere super important so I tried trading a Wednesday for a Sunday. They were reluctant but tried to. But that was few and far between as well as me working both days despite me asking for a better work life balance with years of no rest. I also didn’t get the start pay when I was hired. I heard it was supposed to be $15 but when I started they asked how much I got paid at my previous job and put me down for that (it was less than that). I now am at that $15 but with my schedule being crazy it doesn’t matter. Insurance is also a joke as part time doesn’t qualify and if you do it takes most of your pay to where you’re just trying to pay off the insurance.

      Pros

8 hour shifts are given 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks

      Cons

No flexibility in schedule (forced to work weekends) Low pay Younger staff holds no accountability and gets away with it because management does not care (like a lot of these reviews state) Short staffed in all departments Hostile/Aggressive behavior displayed by most coworkers

      Pros

      Cons

Consistently understaffed. Feels like other employees always have an excuse to not show up, managers are unwilling to pursue discipline because of staffing issues.

      Pros

They hire just about anyone and give them a chance. I did get the position I'd asked for. Nice break room.

      Cons

Crabby coworkers 🙄 Just about no appreciation for going out of your way and doing extra. If you're not willing to fill in for the person that called off, you're the bad guy. Manager and assistant managers were not as caring as they should've been - trust me! The discount is only for Meijer brand products, nothing else. 🙄 They definitely have favorites here! If you want to become one of them, be prepared to be kissing some behinds.

      Pros

I actually get breaks, and they are very understanding and flexible with sceduling.

      Cons

It's very physically demanding, and if you don't have good support in your shoes your feet will be killing you at the end of your shift.

Great Work Place Horrible Team Leads/Supervisors

      Business outlook

      Pros

The pay is decent and there are some dedicated employees who help out tremendously.

      Cons

They claim they are diversified but they are unfair against Blacks. Not all but a few Supervisors favor young girls and abuse their authority. Filing complaints and reporting them only causes retaliation. They will bully you and do anything to get you to quit or fire you for unfair unjust reasons. If you are a favorite then they will pull strings and to erase points and let you get away with everything. It doesn’t matter how excellent your work ethic is. Nothing is done about the reports and they continue to treat people like crap. They will go out of their way to promote a person of color unless they have no choice! The meijer trucks are disgusting and the forklifts are all broken. They give you the bare minimum training and write you up for things they haven’t properly trained you on. They fed us Chicken and watermelon for black history month and only put pictures on the window on the entrance. They decorate the break room for all other holidays. They overload you work unless you work 1st shift. The responsibility falls on all the other shifts. I wouldn’t refer this place to anyone of color or over 40. I’ve saw them mistreat so many wonderful hard working employees and yet nothing is being done! The upper management is like a gang. They stick together and condone misconduct of the Leads/Supervisors. They say “We’re conducting an investigation!” And do nothing. Then they go tell the supervisors you complained and they all gang up on you and harass you until you get so stressed out that you start calling in or quit or mess up and they immediately fire you.
